thank you all for solving above sound problem. It was a basic setting involving the speaker section of the program menu. We had to choose (stereo) mode and the sound.came back. The mouth sounds of the actors are now being heard. Thank you and the Fixya people. The ten dollars was well worth it. eliminating calls to the mfr and their dream team. I reccomend fixya highly and the pay pal method of payment is an excellent asset. Dominic from Detroit

Ive experienced this problem myself and what i did was checking the connection from the sound system to the dvd player if its connected properly. second was checking the settings from the dvd player which is the audio settings on it. when i havent done this yet was the divx files or avi files was function correctly or it has a sound and voice but other orignal dvd was getting a problem just like yours so after i did all the checkings all movies was playing just as i want it to be. otherwise if still the problem persist then try another dvd player from your current sound system or another sound system to the current dvd. hope that helps!
by the way the movie that i was talking about when ive got the problem was the pirates of the carribean at worlds end.

thank you for using fixya and happy holidays!

If there is a setting for subtitles and audio for the playback of movies... check that.... it may be set to the wrong settings

what i mean i guess is that those sounds can be divided into channels.... i believe you can set options on the system to exclude those sounds

I believe your issue are those red/white RCA cords. They will not carry the entire 5.1 Dolby Digital signal

You need to run an HMDI cord from the DVD player to the Receiever, and
then another HDMI cord from the reciever to your projector.

OR to save a few bucks from having to buy another expensive HDMI cord,
buy a optical or coaxial digital cord and run that from your DVD player
    to your reciever.

Set the correct input on your receiver and you should be all set.

When a movie is playing, you can hear all sounds except the actors voices....they are mumbled.

The voices are probably coming out on one of the channels that has a bad speaker, bad wire, loose connector, or bad output. If you have the audio set to 5.1 output, change it to two-channel stereo output. The voices should return to normal.

Gateway dx4840-11e. During video can hear music but not actor voices. What to do?

do you have the sound set to surrond sound? What it sounds like is that it is trying to play through surrond speakers but you dont have them, which is why you can hear the music and not the actors voices. click with the right mouse button on the speaker in the bottom right of your screen, then click on sounds , now click on the playback tab in the sound window, click on the sound device shown and then click configure, choose stereo and choose two speakers. Continue to the end then try to play the video and see if you can now hear the voices. If you cant then you maybe missing codecs needed to play the audio correctly. Please state if this is a movie you have downloaded or a dvd film on disc etc

No English language on DVD 's

Bought a new unit. The old unit was a surround sound system in which the previous owner removed the speakers. I wasn't aware of the problem but found out that it would not allow it to play on Dolby 5.1...It would only play DVD's on channel 2, therefore no english etc. Thanks for your help!!!

DVD plays partial sound

Check your speaker connections it sounds like you have a 5.1 or higher sound system. 5.1 means left front speaker, right front speaker, center speaker, right rear speaker, left rear speaker and subwoofer.

Voices in movies all get channeled to the center speaker (you can usually hear it a bit from the right and left front speakers as well). If your center speaker is disconnected or not working, you will only hear the background sounds.
