Your Motherboard is SATA 1.0 - If you select a newer 2.0 drive you will have to place the 1.5gb jumper on the drive to be visible to the bios and operate at 1.5 instead of 3.0 gbs - http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=searchresult&keywords=ms-7043&table=download
this is the link to the manual and drivers for your mobo
The other option is to purchase an updated SATA 2.0 controller card and then you can support all the new size HD's - here is the link to one such card for $29.99 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2254079&CatId=1455 - if you are not ready to update the mobo, then this is a great solutions

Won't boot from SATA Hard Drive

Specs say it comes with a SATA hard drive. Go into the BIOS and check that it is booting to the HD as opposed to the DVD ROM? If it is, then remove the case and check the connections to the hard drive and from the hard drive to the motherboard. If they are all OK, then you need to swap out the hard drive for a new one, or at least get it tested on a system known to work. You may be able to recover data by putting the old HD into a hard disk enclosure.

You can also try booting to your windows media disk and run scandisk to the SATA HD.

HD REPLACEMENT

Check if you can use SATA else you'll have to look for IDE
Actually to insert a SATA drive is easier then replace a light-bulc.
Just remove cables, unscrew from "drawer" insrtn new drive, scress, replace cables.
If it's a system disk, the difficulty is resintall your system. After you've replaced Hard disk, formulate your question with more doubts

XP cannot be installed natively on an SATA disk without the appropriate driver which must be loaded during the install - an extremely complicated maneuver. The best way to deal with that is to just add the new SATA hard disk: install XP on the PATA and use the new SATA for your files as a separate partition. The adapter cable can be bought for about $5 from the same shop as the hdd.
All the other modifications are just fine - just remember , the RAM will not be fully recognized and used because of the limitations of the 32bit XP.

Hi.I want to format my hard disk and install windows xp home edition. But it end up by saying it cant detect my hard disk. im using MSI km400 with sata.

Windows XP comes in 2 'flavors', one being the OEM or 'Full' version, and the other is the 'upgrade' version. The Full version will setup and format the hard disk, applying the boot track. The Upgrade version expects to see the boot track there, and will not proceed further. You may need a utility like Seagate Diskwizard to setup the hard drive for installation. That program can be downloaded from Seagate's website.

Reagarding some Hard disk

You system probably supports IDE hard disks up to 200GB in size. It all depends on what chipset was used on your motherboard. Since it is a PIII system, the 200GB limit is most likely quite solid. Although, you can get past this by installing a PCI card that can handle larger capacity drives. You could also opt for using a SATA controller, but you will be limited to SATA-150 instead of the more current SATA-300 with a PCI interface.

Windows XP didn't have support for sata drives. You will need to load the driver by pressing F6 when you start the Windows setup. You will see the message
Press F6 to load 3rd party drivers at the bottom of the screen when Windows is installing.

Can a MSI MS-6330 Ver 2.1 Motherboard support a 250 Gb HDD?

Yes, It will although if you buy a new drive, make sure that it has support for IDE as this mobo does not have support for sata. If your wondering IDE cables are the flat ribbon like cables. Sata is smaller, about the size of an ethernet cable, usually red or black.

Did you ensure that the SATA cable is connected ok from the HD to the motherboard, on the appropriate sockets?
If it's ok, try looking at the bios configuration

Replacement HD

Do you know if it is SATA or IDE? If you look at your hard drive, an IDE will have a wide cable connected to the back of it. If it is SATA, it will be a small cable that connects it to the motherboard. I think it is SATA. But nonetheless, depending on the size of the hard drive you want, you can get decent hard drives in the $60 range at www.tigerdirect.com.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya. Thank you.
