I have the same problem. Starts the burning smell, then the motor overheat breaker kicks out. After it cools off, the motor will run again and the waher finishes the cycle. This happens over and over. It takes 30 minutes for the breaker to reset.

Took out the agitator, no problems there. Removed the front panel, no apparent problems there. The belt is fine. No leaks, no visual evidence of what is overheating.

The washer is only 7 years old. Two peolpe in the house, so it is not heavily used. Maytags don't last like they used to. I'll never buy another.

SOURCE: Burning smell + Screeching sound but Belt is not the cause, then WHAT is?

A lot of people may be searching for help with horrible sounds and burned belts for Maytag and Admiral washers only a few years old from Home Depot etc. They used a cheap pump that has a corrugated sheetmetal ring that holds the bearings. Well as it runs the vibration and friction cause it to slip down and grind on the pulley as well as not turn easily. If you put the washer on it's back and turn the small pulley and it turns with a gritty feel or you can actually see a loose metal collar type ring thing that looks like a cookie cutte; then you have a bad pump.

There is a small access panel on the back of the washer. Three screws and two spring clips on the hoses and you're done (use big pliers on the hoses). Put the belt back on (just push motor to one side, it's not tight), then check for leaks and reinstall the cover. VOILA! You can find the pump on ebay for $25 or your local GE parts dealers for $50.

SOURCE: burning rubber smell

Even though manufacturers' love to advertise it, I personally would not load "too many items", as it may cause excessive normal ware and tear on your machine parts, motor, belt, etc.

Yes; the smell can be the belt and possibly your motor as well. The motor may be spinning, but the weight may be too much when the belt is engaging to rotate the drum. I would be careful not to burn the motor (About $120 - part only)

You should be able to access and inspect the drive-belt in the rear of the machine by removing an access panel (back of washer).

To replace the belt if fairly simple. Remove and re-install by wedging a long screw driver in between the belt and metal pulley (circular), while simultaneously rotating the pulley.

You may be required to make a belt repair if you start to have problems with your "washer not spinning" or "making a noise/not spinning"

SOURCE: maytag top load washing machine leaking water from bottom

The machine is leaking water from the bottom, I think the leak is in the area near where the motor is mounted. Before we noticed the water comes from underneath the washer, we smelled like burning rubber.

The drive motor which spins the drum is connected to the drum by a rubber belt. Sounds like the belt is burned through. Make sure you can spin the inside tub by hand to verify that the tub can turn freely before you replace the belt. The hum is from the drive motor just spinning freely.

You need to observe and check after disconnecting the power , touch the motor, the element area or the control panel or the valves/pump.
If you notice any heat on these , it can be the culprit.
You can proceed to remove the suspected part to discover what was the reason for the burning rubber smell.

Tub not spinning smell rubber

If your washer does not drain you need to check this parts.
  1. Inspect the drain hose for kinks
  2. Test the timer control
  3. Test the lid switch(some models)
  4. Inspect the water pump
  5. Inspect the drive belt(belt drive only)
  6. Inspect the motor coupler
Some part of the motor burned out that's why you can smell burning rubber. Check some faulty parts.

Won't fill, drain or spin out properly. Error Code od on panel. Sounds as though pump is running but no water drains out. Also, no water runs into machine when it is started.

sounds like you might have a broken belt. If there was a time you might have smelled rubber burning. The belt will stop all the above mentioned.

Burned belt?

Yes, smell like your belt.. if there is water in tub, try to get it out... (wet vac)... slide your washer out and tilt it back so you can see under... there should be 2 belts.. 1 for gear and 1 for water drain pump... and you can check Sears.com for parts.. good luck...
