New 250gb hd for inspiron 6000, not recognizing os

Everything loaded on hd and ran for a few days, then just a black screen. I reloaded my os, re-seated memory, harddrive and ran a system check, all good. It happened again. I then heard that the bios (which was up-to-date) will function properly with a hd greater 160gb. Any truth? I needed the bigger hd, but not if I have to reload my os every 3-5 days.

Make sure your memory is securely installed. please check
Personally i don't believe you needed the bigger hard drive.
Restart and go into bios setup once in set to default settings
then f10 to save and exit.
Let me know what happens

Problem in os

Try starting explorer by going to file\new task (run..) and typing explorer.

If it doesnt work, just type msconfig on the same box and go to startup tab, leaving everything unmarked, just reboot your pc and problem should be solved

Upgraded hard drive, from 80gb to 250gb. I have had to reload my os twice. it appears that the bios is not recognizing my hd. a friend said that the inspiron 6000 does not do well with a hd bigger then...

I dont think we can use a hard disk of 160gb in an inspiron 6000. and make sure you bought a ATA hard drive and not a SATA drive. For the Western digital try to reinstall XP and install the device drivers before installing application s/w.

Black screen

Try to reinstall XP again, when prompted to partiton, select to do so.
You will lose everything on the hard drive and will need to reinstall all of your programs.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck.

How to Install a new HD on Dell Inspiron 6000?

You can always parition the drive, and install both Ubuntu and XP (dual boot).

Yes, you will be able to access the files (providing the drive isn't totally crashed), although Ubuntu may not "know" what the files are.

Dell Inspiron 6000 monitor display problem

Well it is most likely a issue with the Video driver as you are able to boot to the safe mode.I would suggest going back to the safe mode and deleting the present driver for the video from the device manager.before you restart the system just download the latest version from the support.dell.com so that you can reinstall it.Also check in the graphic properties which screen is set to be the defuat.Incase still not working i would suggest reinstalling the operating system before replacing any hardware.
