While watching programs the picture would disappear into a horizontal line across the middle of the screen and then go back to full picture. Now the TV only shows a horizontal line in the middle of the screen. This is an older 35 inch home theatre model. Is this worth trying to fix?

Re: Picture on RCA TV shrinks to a horizontal line
Sounds to me you have a cold solder joint ( loose solder connection ) on the printer circuit board around or on the vertical chip or on one of the vertical capacitors. You may also have a bad vertical chip or a bad vertical capacitor, but I doubt it since it did come and go. I'de get a soldering iron and some solder and touch up the connections. I will remind you that you need to always excersise saftey by making sure, before removing the back, unplug the TV from the wall, and use care not to come in contact with the large red wire going to the back of the picture tube as the picture tube can be turned off and still store lots of voltage ( up to 35,000 volts). Always stay safe and when soldering, use care not to run solder across places that will make a short.
Good Luck and I hope this helps

This is caused due to random falure of vertical scan circuits. It generally is caused by dried out capacitors or bad driver IC. Unfortunately it will get worse. If you fail to turn the TV off quickly you will burn a permenant horizontal line on the tube. Trip to the repair shop I am afraid.
RCA Entertainment Series 32" Plus Gold, GEMSTAR, xbox ready has been in the shop twice so far. Transformer replaced and 6 months later the picture suddenly had horizontal white lines that gradually spaced apart more from top to bottom and it had a gray hue and fuzzy, but I still watched it for 3 months that way. Today I turned it on and about a minute later I heard a loud crackling sound coming from the back and the picture disappeared, screen went black. Is it worth fixing again? it isnt worth it, your verticle diflection is out, that board is about 3-4 hundred, and you would probabily need a service center do it(messing with like 30000 volts)and they will probabily charge around 200
The vertical output IC LA7847 is failing. It will likely fail permanately and you will have just the horizontal line. The set will require service. Just do not run the set very long in this state. That thin white line can likely burn into the crt phospher and will show all the time thus ruining the glass picture tube...
yes it can still be fixed! the pop sound you've heard maybe came from a blown capacitor in the vertical deflection circuits. this symptom, sometimes called the tube light effect, it is characterised by a bright thin horizontal line across the middle of the screen. this symptom is caused by a breakdown in the vertical deflection circuit. hence maybe the trouble maybe in the vertical oscillator, amplifier or output circuits. but if all i have said is not clear to you, better bring it to a qualified tv technician. good luck!
