Re: olivetti lettera 25 typewriter

Not to insult your intelligence, but having recently purchased the same olivetti typewriter as yourself and I believe the spring loaded wheel, and string you are referring to are the typewriter ribbons, perhaps? It should be made of a ribbon like material and inky its what puts the ink on the paper, some times they can get tangled, simple remove both wheels, either side, and slide out the used ribbon -  you can by more on ebay for about £10. Perhaps this helps, or most perhaps it is something more technical you are referring to and I don't think I could help you there. Good Luck! xD

Platen knobs are usually held by an Allen screw in the side of the shaft, which can be hard to see and get at, but have a good look.

There is a small lever on the right side of the machine under the carriage that is meant to lock the carriage for transport. Press this down.

No ribbon lift

Make sure your cap lock key isn't pushed down. This will disable ribbon shift.

Can't find carriage lock on Olivetti Lettera 25

Learn how to unlock the carriage in Olivetti Lettera 22 Manual posted by Ed Cornish (Carriage Locking Lever 7). It is a different machine model, but the lock/unlock mechanism might be the same.

Lettera 22 - sips and adds spaces on occassion

If it skips at the same place or skips every 10 or 12 spaces all the time it is a broken tooth on the escapement wheel or rack. It could be in typing you are lingering on the key causing it to spring back a little ans space over.

Ribbon supply

This ribbon fits many different typewriters 25 and 35 are the same. Spool should be the metal type not the plastic, and you need the nuts on the top....
