Will the fax know if it's a phone call or a fax?

I would like to switch to having only one designated phone line and I want to know if the fax will know the difference between a call or a fax and how can I set this up. Right now it has it's own designated line.

Fax machine will not receive a fax

try switching the fax with a phone and calling... that phone with your cell... see if you have static... if you have static on the line... then call your phone company and have them fix the line... or try putting a magnet filter on the line... next reconnect your fax and call... if your phone line is ok... and it just keeps ringing.... adjust the ring wait time to 2.... if thats doesn't help... you have a bad mainboard...

I own a Canon Pixma MP530 all-in-one fax, copier, printer, scanner. I cannot send or receive faxes since I switched my Comcast voip phone line from my office to my home phone, along with my MP530. The fax...

First try one step. The line which you have connected with the Fax, unplug any other phone from that line.
Call that number and see whether it rings or you get a fax tone.

A fax machine is just a big ol' telephone answering machine

There is no mystery, seriously. You send a fax exactly the same way as you make a phone call; instead of talking to a person, your fax machine talks to another fax machine. Clicks, squeals, buzz sounds.

If it says it's busy, well, it's busy
If it doesn't answer, it's not set to AUTO RECEIVE
If it says OFF HOOK another device is using YOUR phone line.
If you don't hear a dial tone when you press the HOOK or MONITOR key, the phone line is dead. Check the line with a regular phone.

If a dial tone sounds weird, it is a DIGITAL phone line. You need an ANALOG or regular phone line.

ALL FAX MACHINES ARE ANALOG DEVICES AND WILL NOT WORK RELIABLY ON A DIGITAL SYSTEM OR A COMPUTER....Magic Jack, Vonage, etc. are DIGITAL PHONE SYSTEMS. Don't believe what the Vendor tells you. They are for designed for VOICE GRADE PHONE CALLS ONLY.

The settings in your fax machine were designed by people who are a lot smarter and make more money than us. DON"T MESS WITH THE PARAMETERS.

It's all that SIMPLE !!

How could I switch the fax, to receive

do you mean the fax line is shared with the phone line, and you want the machine to pick up faxes when necessary, and let phone calls go? If that's the case, this mahcine is designed to be on a dedicated line. In other words, there is not setting for "distinctive ring", or to set the # of rings to pick up. It will answer any call coming in. The only thing you can do is set it to "manual receive", under "user tools", "fax features", and then you could use it for sending faxes, but it will not receive unless you switch it to fax, and press the "on hook" button.

Fax is picking up designated phone# as well as designated fax#

Fax won't answer

Fax machines are designed to work on a dedicated line, any other configuration is a **** shoot.

Buy a 2 port phone line adapter and plug it into the LINE port of the fax, it MIGHT work.

Paul,

Seriously, fax machines are designed to have their own dedicated analog phone line.

You can get a fax/phone switch from Radio Shack to hanle this problem.

L75 vs DSL phone line

Fax machines are ANALOG devices designed to work with POTS (plain old telephone system).

Sometimes you can get away with a fax or two w/digital lines, but the machine will be very unreliable.

I don't think there is any damage as the machines have voltage limiter circuits built in. [except for lightning]
