Hi,
Tap F8 on Startup and it'll open up Advanced Settings/BIOS. Tap to Start WIndows in Safe Mode. When you have gotten to the Safe Mode Desktop, navigate to My Computer > C:// > WIndows > System32 and scroll down to an Application called rstrui .
Double-click on that to restore the system back to a point before it was messed up.

Hope that helps

Sounds like a faulty hdd.
Try "startup repair" which preserves your existing user files:

If you don't have the Vista DVD from which to boot to perform the repair, download just the repair disc from here: Windows Vista Recovery Disc Download — The NeoSmart Files

BOOTMGR IS MISSING

I'm assumig this is windows vista?
If it is, then insert the installation CD, (check that the bios is set to boot from cd 1st), follow the steps until it asks if you want to instal vista, or repair vista. Click on startup reapair

Here is a link for doing this in Windows 7:

I have a dell inspiron 6400 and every time i turn it on i get a blue screen and it say: a problem has ben detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME...

its called the blue screen of death and it could have been caused by something you installed recently or a hardware issue, have you tried booting your computer into safe-mode using the F8 key if you cannot boot into safe-mode without getting the same issue then you may have to format your hard drive

You boot sector on the hard drive is faulty.

Fixing "BOOTMGR is missing" Error While Trying to Boot Windows Vista If your Windows Vista computer has encountered the dreaded “BOOTMGR is missing” error, you aren’t alone. If the problem isn’t hardware related you can fix it with relative ease as long as you have a Windows Vista DVD handy.
If you don’t have one, you can create a Windows Vista repair disk using our guide.
image15.png
Boot off the Windows Vista DVD and then click Next at the first prompt:
image16.png
You should see a link in the lower left-hand side for “Repair your computer”
image17.png
The installation process will attempt to find your Vista installation directory. If there’s more than one in the list, select the correct one and then use the Next button again.
image18.png
Click the first link for “Startup Repair”
image19.png
The installation process will repair the system, and then prompt for you to reboot.
image20.png
Alternatively you could have chosen the Command Prompt option instead, and use the following command to fix the boot options only:
bootrec /fixboot
image21.png
At this point you should be able to reboot your computer, remove the DVD and everything should be working.

Thank you.

I was told it needs reformatted the message on

If you have a windows installation disc, you can boot with it and choose repair. Let windows repair the startup files. In Vista, just boot with the disc, choose repair, vista will search the windows installations and give you the result, you highlight the installation and hit repair.

If you have XP, choose repair and when is says to exit to go to recovery console ot install, click install > click F8 to agree > windows will search for windows installations, again highlight the windows installation and choose to repair at that point, windows will attempt to fix the startup files.

Boot Manager

You will want to do a Windows Recovery Environment Startup Repair, follow the instructions below to fix this issue:
To access the WinRE using the Vista install disk:
  1. Boot from the Vista install disk
  2. Choose your language settings and click "Next"
  3. On the bottom of the screen click the link "Repair Your Computer"
  4. Select the Vista installation to repair and click "Next" and it will launch WinRE
The following options are available in WinRE:
  • Startup Repair - It will repair the boot manager files and restore critical files required for booting Windows Vista.

After attempting to repair the system it will display a Startup Repair diagnosis and repair log with the different Test Performed and the probably root cause.

Compressed boot manager

Windows Vista includes a new Boot Manager (BootMgr) that replaces the old NT Loader (Ntldr).

If the boot partition no longer can be found, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information

More Info MS KB 919529
More Info MS KB 927391

This can usually be solved by checking the boot devices, and if no problems found then use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair".

If by accident having compressed the entire boot partition, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
This can usually be solved by using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair". If that fails then use WinRE to enter the "Command Prompt" and execute these commands:
  • compact /U C:\bootmgr
  • compact /U C:\ntldr
