You should have at the VERY LEAST 256 MB of RAM. Check to see whether your memory is upgradeable. If so, then your laptop should have an easy access panel to get at the memory chips.
WinXp will run on 64M but barley. I have done it on a older desktop by removing a 64M chip after it installed, their recommendation for a minimum is 128 and that is pretty slow, the more mem you have the better for XP. Most recommend 512 as the minimum for a desktop running XP but laptops are slower by design so 128 is minimum workable memory.
Depends on the type of XP you're loading and what you want running. As far as my tests have gone I've managed to strip my XP Corporate edition to 150MB install cd and installs bare onto 64MB of RAM on a pentium 2 333mhz! It runs great but I prefer to run Linux instead on something that slow.
So if you want to run everything then anything less than 1GB of RAM is wasting time. But a copy of nlite and you can strip down the programs so it takes less RAM

hey i have just brought 1gb of memory for my toshiba portege m100 well lol i do not know how to put it in could you please help me ???
Although a computer with 64 MB of RAM will have sufficient resources to run
Windows XP and a few applications with moderate memory requirements(
Office productivity applications and Web browsers fall into this
category of applications.) Microsoft recommends that Windows XP be run with at least 128 MB of RAM. The recommended amount of RAM for Windows XP is 256 MB. The demand varies with the type of applications you use.
suggest adding 512 for todays standards of software.
underneath laptop youll find various compartment covers which inside one of them are your mem chip/chips.
these covers are usually secured by 1 or 2 retaining screws, remove screws and lift off cover ;inside youll find mem boards, and mem slots.some models have mem card beneath keyboard and expantion slot underneath pc in compartment so if you remove compartment cover to find you have 1 mem slot with no mem dont worry this is the place to add extra ram.
to install fit mem card into housing and push down till clips click.
if you have 2 mem slots together and you need to remove one ;open clips outwards to release mem cards.
im running xp pro with a 466 p2 and 128 ram works just fine...

if you want to know how much memory as a minimum you need to run win xp then thats 64mb but you need a processor of at least 166mhz, with that config its likely to be very slow, ive tried it, ive even loaded xp on a pentium 90 with 40mb ram.. 4hrs 45mins to load. imho i would use 128mb ram and at least a pentium 2 266mhz or higher for general use
I'd say 512 mb of ram is the least you would want to run XP. Although you can run it with less, this would be the least amount I would use with XP and expect to have descent performance. Also check to see how much, if any, is "shared" with the video card. Many laptops use part of the memory for the video card and this memory can't be used by windows. Don't bother with anything more than 2 GB's because windows won't really use it.
The minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP Professional include:
•
Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
•
At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
•
At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
•
CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
•
Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
•
Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher resolution
•
Sound card
•
Speakers or headphones

I use the max 96 mb ram in a Lifebook 770tx and run windows XP Service pack 2 without problem. It's OK for most of the normal work (word, surf net).
well i had a laptop that ran 256mb and i would say at a minium i would recommend 512 if not 1 gb i upgrade mine to 2 gb and it rock and it only cost me 80 dollar and is super easy to do so really i would shoot for the minium i would upgrade to the maxium it will be worth it in the long run
There's another version of Windows XP (sort of, based off it), called Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs, which only requires a minimum of 64MB of RAM to run.

Hi Everyone, Am facing a strange problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 1000, 2.2Ghz Celeron processor, 256MB RAM, 80GB HDD. In the BIOS setting there is a setting for Display, which is set to XGA 14.1". This setting automatically changes to 'Unknown' & the screen does not display anything when you 'ON' the laptop. The boot up screen too is not displayed. However the laptop boots fine into Windows XP ( this is observed when you connect an External monitor to the laptop's VGA port. I have also observed that if the value in the BIOS is 'XGA 14.1" ' then only the laptop recognises the display. I have tried changing the CMOS battery , but with no results. I also tried to set the BIOS settings to 'Factory default' settings, still of no use. If at all I managed to open the BIOS settings ( whenever the display is visible), the 'Display' setting keeps on fluctuating intermittently. Also, cannot change the values manually. Kindly help. Thanks for attention.
