Now the answer is "yes". You could increase your graphics memory by installing an external graphics card.

If you have an IBM ThinkPad T30, and some other models (T20, T21, T22, A21, A22, A30, X20, X22 and X30), you can buy (eBay) a docking station 2631 (P/N 02K8660) (FRU 08N179), not just the port replicator. The docking station has a PCI slot on the side that can accept a half size video card or any other half size PCI Card. The upgraded video card would have to be connected to a video monitor and as long as the T30 is in the docking station, you can take advantage of the upgraded video card. You also get an extra UltraBay 2000 port and two more PC Card slots as well as all the other normal ports.

Generally, the answer to this question is "no". But there may be very specific models of laptops that allow for different graphic choices from the factory. All of this could change as laptop design continues to evolve. Consider at one time you couldn't add more memory to a laptop - now you can.
