Question about Sony VAIO VGN-S460 Notebook
Normally that is false and company's like to have only there parts in these machines as a way to ensure quality.
You could try and see if you can detect it in computer management in the administrative tools in the control panel if the drive is a slave or external.
If you are replacing or adding a new master drive make sure it is detected in the machines BIOS if not I would think the motherboard does not support a drive of that size or may only support certain types.
