1 Answer

Local computer I have my wgr614 hooked up to a local computer (desktop) that has crashed. I would like to set it up on my laptop. Can I set it up without having the laptop wired to the router...In other words is this a true wireless router? the set up says it has to be set up with a local computer any help would be appreciated.

Hi. Yes, this is a wireless router. You can use the router with your laptop, wired or wirelessly, provided you have the right adapters (and unless your laptop is very old, you will have:))

The 'setup' referred to in your posting refers to the intial setup of the router with your ISP, which must be done with a wired connection. Any changes in the configuration of the router -eg, changing the wireless security settings - must also be done with a wired connection. Otherwise, you're OK to go wireless!

If you need help with wireless connection or wireless security, please come back to Fixya.

Make sure that your computer is able to go online directly through the modem.
If your computer is able to go online through the modem, that means the modem is working fine.
You will need to connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
open the set up page of the router and change the settings of the router according to the ISP.

After a good time in use a laptop cannot ''see'' the netgear wgr614 router, altho it detects other local wireless networks. Also, the cable connection informs me that there is limited or no connection....

Have you tried unplugging, and re-plugging in the router, that will soft reset it, and also at the same time, rebooting the PC? If no good, log onto the Router and check all the settings... Can you use another PC to "See" if that one can detect it OK?

Resetting the router is not really the solution. I would suggest you upgrade the firmware of the router. WGR614 has nine versions. So please make sure to choose the correct firmware for your router. The firmware can be found here.. http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WGR614.asp
Hope this helps

Cannot connect other devices to my router

You reset it to open, no encryption and it still didn't work? HMMM. You are able to get your PS3 online? but can't connect your laptop and desktop? Are you hard wiring the desktop to the router? or are you trying to connect it wirelessly? If you are configuring your router with either the laptop or desktop, make sure the IP settings on your connection manager are set to the correct domain under Local Area Connection Properties, like 192.168.1.226, or something similar. Login to the router with your admin credentials. Make sure in your configuration (as instructed in your manual) that you have the router time set correctly so the lease time for your devices aren't expired. Apply settings. After exiting your router configuration screen, go back to your connections manager, either wireless connection, or ethernet adapter in your network connections folder, and under the General tab of the Local Area Connection Properties, change the properties of your TCP/IP client back to "Obtain an IP Address Automatically." Click "Close" and your computer should show "Connected."

1. check your network adapter TCP/IP settings if its set into "Obtain as IP address Automatically".
2. if the settings is set as Automatic and your not getting IP address then select "Use the following IP Address"
3. use IP address followed to your router address like if192.168.0.1 in router type 192.168.0.2 or192.168.0.3 justcheck the next address IP in your network.
