Usually this is a sign that the unit is in Announce Only (AO) mode.
To check the setting, press Options. Then use the softkey to select Ans Sys. Next select the line for which you want to check the setting (L1 or L2). Use the up/down (Call List) arrows to choose the current message type (A, B, C, or AO). Press Play/Stop to play this message or select Record to record a new message. To save desires the outgoing message announcement setting, press OK after you select A, B, C, or AO. Repeat this for the second phone line if you have a two line system.
A default message is available for the outgoing messages A, B and C. If you select one of these message types and do not record your own message, the default message will play.
The manual is available at retrevo here: http://www.retrevo.com/support/AT%26T-1782-manual/id/473bh051/t/2/ . You will need to enter a code to access the file.
I hope this helps.
