I'll require some consistency on your behalf; you should clear out the waste frequently, a couple of times a day, and keep the box itself as clean as possible.

SOURCE: How can I avoid and prevent a smelly litter box?

You should get into the habit of scooping the waste at least twice a day. You should completely empty and clean the litter box once a week. Scrub the pan and scoop with detergent and a small amount of bleach to disinfect and then rinse thoroughly.

Keeping your cats litter box smelling fresh

If your cats litter box is not cleaned every day, or the litter is not changed frequently, the odor will build up. Here are some tips that will help you keep litter box odor at a minimum:

ā€¢ Never put your cats litter box in your own bathroom. The best location for a litter box is in a small closet; preferably somewhere you keep your cleaning supplies.

ā€¢ Avoid using hooded litter boxes. No matter how clean you keep it, the hood will trap odors.

ā€¢ Try lining the bottom of the litter box with a thin layer of baking soda.

ā€¢ Opt for a clumping cat litter. They make it easier to remove waste.

ā€¢ Use a litter box deodorizer.

ā€¢ Be diligent about cleaning the litter box and area surrounding it

The following is a great brand of litter that neutralizes odors upon contact with moisture. I have noticed a difference since we started using it.

Is Silica gel litter safe for kittens?

I would avoid using Silica gel litter in a kittens litter box and wait until they are slightly older. Young kittens are prone to tasting cat litter (simply out of curiosity). Silica crystals can be harmful if ingested and for this reason alone should not be used.

Is it better to get a covered or uncovered litter box for my cat?

I prefer uncovered litter boxes. Some cats may become claustrophobic in a covered litter box, giving them a sense of being trapped. Although covered litter boxes may seem like an appealing method of reducing odors throughout your home, consider how your cat will feel. A cats sense of smell is much stronger and more sensitive than ours. Lastly, covered litter boxes can trap a lot of dust. This may seem advantageous; however it is quite the opposite. The dust can be very difficult on your cats lungs and become very unhealthy.

I heard from a friend that it is not safe to handle cat litter when pregnant. Is this true?

This statement is partially true. Pregnant women can safely handle unused cat litter; however used cat litter should be avoided. Cat ***** has been known to transmit a disease known as toxoplasmosis; which can seriously harm an unborn baby.
