Question about Sony SLV-D550P DVD Player/VCR

1 Answer

VHS Picture on new recorded tape shows horizontal bars.

When recording a VHS tape and then playing the tape back, horizontal lines appear across the picture. Sound is not affected. Adjusting the tracking makes the lines roll faster or slower, but does not solve the problem. This is a fairly new machine -- used about 6 hours per week.

How do I get the DVD to record what is on the VHS tape not the TV?

You can record from an external component, such as a camcorder or VCR, connected to any of the Recorder's external inputs.
1. Make sure that the component you want to record from is connected properly to the Recorder. See page 14.

2. Press AUX repeatedly to select the external input to record from.
• AV1: Audio/Video Input mounted on back panel.
• AV2: Audio/Video Input mounted on front panel.
• DV: DV Input mounted on front panel.

page 37 from manual:

If this fails, try to disconnect the tv input cable and connect the vcr cable.

I transferred some pictures from my computer on a Maxell RW disc. When I played the disc on my Funai DVD/VHS Dual recorder model DRV-2737 no picture appeared on TV screen. What could be the problem? On the... seem like your dvd/vhs player is outdated...(do the rw disc plays in pc?) are you using Nero software? this will curve the problem...or try another DVD RW brand that funai is compatible with...dvd players, dvd recorder and pc dvd burners do roll back...all must be a year or less apart to work with each other....

Vhs SP tapes

It sounds like the tapes may be physically damaged, wrinkled or creased. This may have been done when they were played in whatever machine you used 5 years ago. Tapes can also be damaged in storage by heat or humidity. Tapes should also be stored on end in their boxes, not flat. If these tapes were stored flat, the bottom edge might have gotten wrinkled. This can damage the control track and cause playback issues.

Connect DVD recorder to Video player/recorder- transfer VHStodisc

hook the video output from vcr to dvd input at rear, then hook output from dvd to tv input. note; you can not record protected vcr movies you can only record tv shows from sattelite to vcr or dvd recorder. its best to record straight from sattelite to dvd recorder for picture clarity.

1}DVDR 3480 playback on many Dvds widescreen insteadof 4.3 as set. 2) my Vcr. has 3pin phono. Dvdr scart to Phono .Xt2 says nosignal. Phono tophono (cam socket) no signal .cannot copt tape to DVD. 3)B W...

1) The 4:3 / 16:9 option only optimises playback for that particular type of TV. The 4:3 setting also allows you to set the output between:

  • 4:3 PS - expands the picture vertically and horizontally which gets rid of the black bars, but you also lose the left and right edges of the picture.
  • 4:3 LB - Letterbox format, displays the full picture from the disc, with black bars top and bottom.
The PS option loses the bars on 16:9 widescreen DVDs, but may still leave bars on true cinema widescreen DVDs, which are 21.7:9
This is normal.
  • 16:9 - Optimises the picture for a widescreen TV. Again True cinema widescreen DVDs will still have black bars.
2) All of the external inputs will show "No signal" until there is actually a signal playing into them.
EG to copy VHS to DVD, you will need to select the relevant scart or phono input, and press play before the recorder will register a signal and allow recording.
Some bought VHS videos have copy protection, and may cause problems when copying to DVD.

3) Greenish playback maybe caused by colour setting on TV being too high. Also check Hue or Tint settings on the TV, if it has them.

4) For some reason, in their infinite wisdom, Philips omitted the Video Plus facility from this model.

It sounds like the tape is cocked slightly. some VHS tapes did make noise. I'd take it to the store and show them the noise.
