Question about Bemis 4D7-800 Humidifier
I purchased an old Bemis Humidifier and have been cleaning it ALL day! I have it spotless, put a new filter on the wheel, and started it up. Everything works great, except the wheel stops turning sporadically. There are two smaller wheels that the main drum hangs from (into the water). One small wheel is connected to the motor and turns the drum. The other seems to just be there for balance. When the drum (larger wheel) stops turning, I checked to see if the drive wheel was still turning . . . it was. I have checked, cleaned, and lubed both little wheels. I cannot see where it is getting hung up. Any helpful advice? Is there something I could put on the drive wheel to make it grip better?
Replace the Idler and drive wheel. Even if it looks good the grove in the wheels get deeper over time until they don't work anymore. In a pinch a rubber band or two doubled up in the grove will make it work till you get the parts. Clean and replace the rim of the wheel once a year, replace the wheels once every few years and the thing will last 20+ years. The real reason they don't make them like this anymore is they would be missing out on the income of selling everyone wicks all the time. It's a far superior design. I kept a few of them running for my parents for years. I'm watching for one for my house, I'd pay tripple the cost of a modern new one for one of these in decent condition.

This humifier has a black drive wheel and a white idler wheel. On mine, the idler wheel froze up which caused the drive wheel to damage itself trying to turn the drum. First, free up the idler wheel and replace the shaft it rotates on. The idler wheel is still available but you'll have to fabricate the shaft using a machine screw and hollow shaft from your local hardware store. When the idler wheel turns freely, the drive wheel (if still in decent shape) can do its job of turning the drum. If not, you can replace the drive wheel (also still available). I recently put a small rubber band in the groove of the drive wheel and it enabled it to get the necessary grip on the drum.
It's getting harder and harder to keep these wonderful Bemis water Wheel humidifiers alive as the years go by. I wish they still made them because no other humidifier comes close.

That is a common problem and why those type of humidifiers have been discontinueed. Sorry
