HP5550c scanner using Paperport 7.0LE - slow scanning

My HP5550c scanner has software that even with updates doesn't work well with Windows XP. I am using Paperport 7.0 LE software to access to scanner. Everything WAS working fine until recently, when the scanner speed dropped significantly (was 5-8ppm, now down to 2ppm). I'm trying to determine what might have caused this and how I can fix it? I do a faorly large amount of scanning for business and this is a significant hinderance.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Win XP Pro, HP Officejet L7780, Paperport 9.

I have to scan and fax packages containing approx. 50 legal-size pages. Takes an hour to scan, and an hour to fax. Set at 140dpi, min possible for legible results. Have to feed scanner 10 sheets or less at a time or it grabs multiple pages. Computer, HP Inspiron 9300, 2ghz processor and 1gig ram, locks up, even when I'm not scanning or faxing. Have to reboot with power key, nothing else works. Got the Officejet new in the box for Christmas, but HP says its about 350 days out of warranty! Everytime I have to reboot, printer has to go through its initialization and says it was unable to align print heads, so I've never been able to print anything with it! If I try to do anything else on the computer while scanning or faxing, it gives a loud beep and everything just powers off and I have to start over. Any help would be appreciated!

Have you noticed any quality difference in the scans? Sounds like it is set to scan at a higher resolution which will take longer.

I have Mustek 1248US. Can it scan to PDF?

Scan to PDF is controlled by your software. What OS and software are you running? Under Windows, Nuance's PaperPort, http://www.nuance.com (or OmniPage which includes PaperPort) or Abby Fine Reader Express, http://www.Abby.com , both will let you scan to PDF. Open the software and set the options for scanning to PDF. Then press the scan button in the software. (Depending on the OS and Mustek driver, you may get this to work by pressing the Scan button on the scanner itself. This depends on installing a monitoring program that may be included in the drivers. This "listens" for the button press and then launches the desired software.) Other third-party software may also do this.

If you are using something like Windows Fax and Scan, you'll have to do two steps. Scan and then convert the file from an image to PDF. (There are dedicated programs that convert image files to PDF or you can do this is Microsoft Office or other office suites with the appropriate add-on.)

I hope this helps.

(I have an older scanner with Windows 7; I can only scan to PDF with third-party software.)

Can you also Fax with this One Touch 8900 ?

This is only a scanner. To Fax, you will need a separate fax machine or fax modem. If both the scanner and fax machine are connected to your computer, you will be able to scan the document and then fax it from the computer. (Depending on your OS/software, this could be easy or take several steps. For Windows Vista and Windows 7, you can use Windows Fax and Scan to do both steps. (However, the program doesn't scan to PDFs.) Paperport will also send a scanned document to an installed fax option. PaperPort is part of the third-party software that came on the CD with the scanner.)

Documentation for the Visioneer OneTouch 8900 is available here: http://support.visioneer.com/products/8900/default.asp .

I hope this helps.

(There are some email-to-fax and web-to-fax options but I have not reviewed them.)

I can't find software for Brother MFC-6800 printer for Vista....I can print only..I can't find scan, copy software for vista

The OS has a built-in driver that should automatically install when the USB cable is connected. Check Windows Update for new and optional updates if you don't see the printer appear. If you use a bi-directional parallel cable (with the computer properly set up), use the Printer Wizard and then the Add Device Wizard (IIRC). The scanner won't work over the network.

Try using one of the programs built into Windows: Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan), Paint (File > Import from Camera or Scanner > New Scan) or Photo Gallery to launch a scan. Alternatively, get a third-party software option (Paperport, for example).

Go here: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us_ot/en/dlf/download_top.html?reg=us&c=us_ot&lang=en&prod=mfc6800_us to get a utility to improve the scan resolution.

I hope this helps.

(Scanner problems can often be resolved with a new data cable and a direct connection between the unit and the computer. This assumes that the scanner is unlocked (for those with a transport lock) and that the unit is properly lighting up and the scanner is moving freely.)

How to use a scanner?

What OS do you have? If you have a Windows XP or 2000, download and install the full-featured software and use the HP software to scan.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=306895&

If you have Vista and Win 7, HP doesn't have a full-software driver package. You will be using the drivers built into the OS.

For Vista, you can scan using the Windows Photo Gallery (File, Import from Scanner) or Paint (File, From Scanner or Camera) and with some versions Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan, File, Scan).

If you have Windows 7, Paint and Windows Fax and Scan will let you access the images/documents on the scanner.

In all cases, a good cable and ports will make scanning much less frustrating.

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(alternatively, you could get third party software for Vista or 7. PaperPort is one example)

Software doesn't work anymore

If you got this scanner to work with Windows 98, the scanner is an antique. New scanners are so much better, my first suggestion is to get a new scanner, one that works with Vista as well as XP. It will have all new software that comes with it. Otherwise you could purchase, new software such as Nuance Easy Media Creator 10 Suite, right now you can get it with Paperport 11 added in for FREE. However consider the cost of a new scanner, versus the cost of buying new software only, and running it on the old scanner.
