Showing the mouse cursor. This is a Gateway 7330 laptop. Even booting up in safe mode, the screen is black except it does show safe mode in the corners and some information across the top of the screen. But no desktop. I have connected an external monitor same results.
Cant boot even on safe-mode ? re-install
>it boots past POST and loads initial Windows only on both normal and safe-mode.
- so there's nothing wrong with the computer.
- no need to check the BIOS.
- system restore is not possible since you cant load windows.
- Last known good configuration wont work either (you had probably tried that).
recovery disk OR re-installation is your next step. nothing can be done to revive windows even if you can DOS your way into it.
file/data recovery ? get the hard drive out and put it in an enclosure with USB then connect it to another computer.
Safe mode has different screens try a restore, several ways to get to your restore option. One is while in the screen your in, click start, Programs, accesories, system tools, system restore, select a date, the closest to today the better, the highlated ones are what we need, click on it and let it do it's thing. Another way is as your computer is restarting, tap the f7 and or the f8, key, it wil come up with a message that asks you if you want safe mode or restore select restore, good luck, get back to me if restore dosen't work and we will take it from there, thanks
Does it show same result in safe mode ? If No then try recovery cd/dvd to restore operating system ,but before that try f8 option that means advance boot option and select "Last known good configuration ........." option...Let me know if it works

I did this and during the restore, it froze up at 57 percent. It stayed there for several hours.
I would try putting my recovery disk in load it up and type chkdsk this generally frees any disk errors in XP.
