Question about Refrigerators
The helix cap is worn so the auger slips out of place and jams on the side of the ice bucket. How do i get the old cap off and the new one on Amana - Model ARS9167AW ice maker. Auger motor turns but auger has slipped out of cap and appears not to be alinged correctly. The curve of the auger hits the side of the bucket. I have it all apart and need to put it together. I need the specs to get it back together and don't know what kind of ice maker this is. It's worked well for 7 years. Do you know where I can get this information?

I have a Kenmore Side by Side with the same problem. Sears says the dispenser can not be replaced as a unit. I have to remove the bucket and free the cubes jamed in the dispenser by hand weekly. I've found the same problem listed for Whirlpool Side by Sides. Appears like a design change is needed. T. Macaluso

SOURCE: GE PS123 MGNA CC Ice Auger
I just finished replacing the ice auger in my GE HSS25GFPA side-by-side and offer some suggestions/hints.
The auger (WR17X11705) was available locally (Appliance Parts Co., $28.97). This fits many other refrigerators. The replacement took a little under 2 hours. I estimate these hints may cut the time by one-half.
There are only 4 screws in the entire ice drawer assembly. It possibly was not necessary to remove the control rod. The other 3 screws hold the front cover. There are also 2 tabs holding the top of the cover.
The most difficult part of the repair was removal of the plastic assembly housing the crusher blades and the front bearing of the auger. This is held in place by only 2 large square tabs on the sides. There is enough space to get ONE side to release BUT to get both released required careful prying with thin-bladed screwdrivers (and prayer). These "tabs" don't push in, rather the drawer flexes out. Once released, the unit slides up and angles to allow removal of the auger/crusher. Re-assembly could not be easier. Stainless sheet metal screws would probably work if you do break something.
Remove the clear inside cover of the crusher assembly and the "C" clip on the threaded end of the auger shaft to separate the auger from the crusher.
And now for my PRIMARY reason for sharing my experience - the %#$@ plastic nut/bearing is a LEFT-HAND THREAD. I only realized this when trying to bend my make-shift split screwdrive back and the SOB loosened right up!
Carefully note the locations and orientations of the blades and spacers as you move them from the old to the new auger.

Your most likely culprit (since you still are able to get the auger to work) is probably the dispenser control board.
Also just double check the connections at the top of the freezer door under your hinge cover to make sure nothing came loose.

Testimonial: "Thanks - that can be done by popping the cover off at the door hinge?"

Check the ice storage container. The
ice dispenser will not dispense ice until the first supply ice has dropped into
the ice storage container.Remove excess ice from the back of the
ice container. Make sure ice cubes are not jammed between the ice maker and the
back of the ice container.
auger won't engage or turn
to dispense ice.Remove the ice bucket and with a hair dryer warm up
the inside where the fork is that turns the auger in the bucket and try it and
if this does not help then you will have to replace the auger motor ,, chances
are the motor is just froze up .--------
If there is nothing jammed then try this./Remove the ice bin out.And then clean the ice bin.
Rotate the auger with your hand.If its hard then there is problem with auger motor. If the auger is not rotating fine then its faulty auger motor or the auger motor is frozen,if you notice ice getting collected there.
Take a hair dryer and blow hot air on the auger motor for few minutes.Take care you dont blow hot air continuously.
But if that is not helping then disconnect auger motor connecting wire wait for 2 minutes clean the connector and reconnect the connector back and see.If that is not helping at all. Then, replace the auger motor.

This will help. Thanks.
