There is a router also, the person who was in my room previously had a laptop that worked on the wireless network just fine.

  • daveInVA Dec 19, 2008

This is at the place I rent during the week. Got layed off and the only job I found was 160 miles from home, so I wont have a chance again until at least Monday to try out your suggestion. BTW the router is readily available how do I find out what the encription key (and or name of the network is?)

Got back to the rental house last night and got it working in no time. Thanks!

Ok then you need the encription key in order to gain access to the network, ask the guy who set it up, that should do it

The only way is to ask the person who set it up, if no one uses it or remembers, we can set it up from scratch and you can then just give the rest of the people who use it the key. The worse thing would be if there wsn no evcription on it, then anyone can see everything on your machine. Most routers won't let you even set them up that way, so someone in the house will hwve it. The defauls password for linksys is ADMIN, speak to you soon, Peace, Gym

I have xbox live and my NAT is set to moderate and I can't figure out hoe to change it. Everyone says go into the modem setting screen on your web browser but I don't know how to get to that.

You need to type in the ip address of your router in the address bar of your web browser. In order to get this ip address, you can use the ipconfig command on the Windows command prompt. To get to the prompt, just got to the main Start button and select Run, then just type in cmd and select Open. If you have Win 7 you can just type cmd in the search and it will find the command prompt.

Once you typ the ipconfig command on this command prompt, the ip you are looking for is the Default Gateway. After going to that IP on your web browser, you should be prompted for the Modem's user and password.

Default username: admin
Default password: motorola

Both are case sensitive.

If these credentials have been changed by your ISP or someone else, you can reset the device to its factory settings by holding the reset button for more than 30 seconds.

Now you should be able to go into the modem settings screen.

Weak signal thorugh my sbg 900 wireless surfboard gateway

On the Wireless > SECURITY — basic Page check whether the WPA Encryption type is TKIP.

If all of your wireless clients support AES, change the WPA Encryption to AES. This may make a difference for you.

The ploblem is In need the solution of wire less network to build in the big house.

I presume you need Internet access in this house using a wireless network.
The best place to locate the wireless router is in a spot centrally located where the radio signals can reach the rooms where the computers are located. The DSL or cable modem/connection would also need to be in this area so it can connect to the wireless router.
If the wireless router is in a multi-storey house and the floor slab and walls are concrete and/or brick, then the radio signals will be impeded and the signal strength to some rooms will be weak.
In such circumstances, it maybe better to install network cables from these rooms to the wireless router, or install wireless access point repeaters to increase wireless coverage.
If you are not sure how to setup and install this network, then I suggest you get help from a computer savy friend or from your computer friendly shop.

Need to change the security of my SBG 900 wireless router

Plug your router in with an ethernet connection and type 192.168.100.1 into your browser address bar. This should load the modem login screen. Unless you have changed the username / password they are admin / motorola. From here you can click on wireless and configure the SSID and security setup.

Does a router or combo need to be connected to computer?

As you already have the modem you only need a router. In all cases the modem connects to the WAN port on the router.

I think your best bet surely would be to go for a wireless router though? Then you wouldnt have to trail ethernet cables all round the house. I'm sure your laptop has a wireless adaptor built in unless it;s very old.

I always use Netgear networking stuff so forgive me posting a link to a nice 54G wireless router :-) :

Setting Up a Wireless Network

You can still use your existing Linksys router with your cable modem. In fact the router your have is designed to work with DSL/Cable Broadband connections.

1. Make sure to properly connec the devices in your network. Modem will be connected to the Internet port of the router. Then, laptop will be connected to one of the 4 Ethernet ports of the router. For initial setup of your router with modem, you need to hardwire laptop to the router.
2. Press and hold reset at the back of the router for about 15 seconds.
3. After 15 seconds turn off the router and then turn off the modem. Wait for a minute.
4. Power on modem and wait for the lights to be ready.
5. When modem lights are on, turn on router.
6. There should be 4 lights on. Power should be steady green. Internet, WLAN and Ethernet port.
7. Checked if you have Internet connectivity on your laptop while it is wired to the router.
8. If Internet is working, disconnect laptop from wired connection to the router and check available wireless network that laptop can detect.
9. The default wireless network name that the Linksys router broadcasts is "linksys". Connect to it which is an unsecured wireless network.
10. Once you are successfully connected, check Internet.

Hope this helps!

Networking with Motorola SBG 900 Gateway

No, you don't need a router... that gateway supports up to 253 devices on your private network segment. That being said, you only have one ethernet port, so if your desktops have LAN cards rather than wireless, you'll need a hub to split off enough ports. If you add a router, it'll give you a whole new level of complexity. A gateway is a router/modem combo. It converts the Cable Internet signal from your ISP to ethernet and isolates all of the computers behind it into your own private network. A hub is basically an ethernet splitter... it won't isolate a new network segment, it'll just add more ports. Get a hub, they are cheaper and won't add a new level of complexity.
