Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven
Same problem as jayg714: microwave runs a few seconds, stops (no beeps), and then a garbled display. Need to re-enter date and time. If I try again immediately, it happens again; if I wait awhile, it seems to work. This has happened 3 or 4 times in the past few weeks. The unit is about 2 years old. Suggestions?
Your magnetron tube is leaking RF energy inside and zapping the main board. It is NOT dangerous as any leakage will be contained inside the unit. You will need a new mag tube and it is covered by a 5 or 10 year parts warranty. Call GE Factory Service at 1-800-432-2737or schedule online at www.geappliances.com

If the microwave runs for a few seconds and then shuts off, a door switch might have failed intermittently. Check each of the door switches for any signs of overheating, arcing, or burning. Also check each of them for continuity. Replace any of the switches that is visibly damaged or that only has continuity intermittently
the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the touchpad and
control panel might be defective. There are several other components
that can cause this problem, be sure to check any other components
before replacing this board.
the microwave runs for a few seconds and stops the touchpad might be
at fault. This is not common. Generally speaking, if the microwave
display is working and some of the buttons respond correctly but
some don't, the problem is with the touchpad.
