The remote that came with my portable dvd player is not working. This would not be a problem if the subtitle option was not turned on when it broke, but it is. I have tried changing the batteries but that did not help.

Good day, usually for dvd subtitle the only option for you to get rid of the subtitle is using the remote control. But you can check the dvd player itself if it has a menu button which will allow you to access the subtitle but when i check it i didn't see any button. So i suggest for you to just purchase another remote if you really want to have the subtitles disable. Hope this information help you a bit. Have a great day.
Normally when a DVD is inserted, the subtitles option (if it appears in the on-screen DVD menu) is set to 'OFF' by default, but since you do not have the remote, you cannot access it. Some DVDs have the subtitle/captions enabled at startup, so there is nothing you do can do without the correct remote for this model (which may no longer be available anywhere) and it's even worse if the subtitles are not in English or the audio language is not English or both!
Nice to have a remote (universal one if you can find one which can operate this model) then you can have basic control over it, but I cannot assure you that it will turn subtitle/captions off per disc. Just one of those things - but you can look around for a universal remote (if it has subtitle button) and it might work. Or you can look around at secondhand remote/DVD decks online etc.
Up to you what you decide to do here. If it comes to the crunch, and you can no longer tolerate the subtitles being on all the time with each disc during manual playback, consider replacing the whole player (this is cheaper in the long term) - but only as a last resort, since Blu-Ray players (with DVD playback support) are becoming cheaper to buy. Something to think about later on if necessary.
There are 2 methods for changing the subtitle settings on your DVD player.
To turn off the subtitles on your DVD player during playback:
1. Press the "SUBTITLE" button on your remote control
The subtitle button is just below the "0" (zero) numerical key on the remote control. It is marked "SUBTITLE" above the button and the button has "ABC" written inside a white rectangle on it. 2. Use the left "<" and right ">" arrow keys to change the subtitle setting
Each time you press an arrow key the subtitle language will change and eventually the language will read "OFF". The subtitles are now switched off during playback.
To turn disc subtitles off from the main menu:
1. Press the "MENU/LIST" button on your remote control (directly below "STOP")
The main menu will now appear 2. Press the down arrow key on your remote once to highlight "A" in the left hand column of the main menu 3. Press the right arrow key on your remote once to move to the right-hand column of the menu 4. Press the down arrow twice to highlight "Disc Subtitle" 5. Use the left and right arrow keys to change the subtitle options until your required choice is displayed
6. Once set, press the "MENU/LIST" button again to exit the menu.
This should solve your problem, but if you need any further assistance, please post back.
On the remote there should be an option for subtitle or "SUB". Have it pressed and it should provide you with different subtitle options. Some DVDs have more than one subtitle to support multiple languages. To remove it, set it to "OFF".
This works to change region code 5. This is how it works. 1)Power on player. 2)Ensure that there is no DVD inside the player. 3)The tray should be closed. 4)Press "Subtitle" on the remote control.
5)Press 53814 for region 5 (For other regions see any of the other cracks) 6)The region code 5 will be displayed on the left top corner of your screen. 7)Now press 9. A 9 will be displayed on the top left corner of the screen.
8)Press Subtitle on the remote again 9)Power off the player. 10)Power it on again and you are region independent!! Worked for me.
