One quick question. My daughter has no way of backing up her computer, due to the fact that it won't turn on. So if she sends it back will the data be safe on her hard drive?

I am facing the same problem since two days. Though switched on and off F8 as suggested by email from service people no improvement. Product number is not in the list mentioned in HP web site. Please suggest what to do further.

This might be the symptom of a known issue with the DV2000 series of HP laptops, caused by a failure in the video portion of the motherboard. If so, then it might qualify for a special free repair even if you're beyond the one-year standard warranty period.

My son's computer was showing a black screen, even while it appeared otherwise to be starting normally. HP replaced the motherboard and he got it back yesterday after a 3 day turnaround. I was amazed.

Of course I can't say for sure that your problem is the same, but take a look at the following page and then call HP to see if it qualifies. Have the computer up and running when you call, as they'll ask you to do some tests while you're on the phone. Good luck!

If HP decides to replace the motherboard, they probably won't do anything to the hard drive. My son got his back with all data intact. However, there's always a chance that something could happen, so I won't say the probability is zero. If she has data that's irreplaceable or especially sensitive, then you might get a local shop to temporarily stick the drive in another computer to copy or delete the data. Check with HP first, though, to make sure this won't create a new issue with them.

That happened to me before, i just took out all the removable chips from underneath the laptop (you have to unscrew and take off the middle of the bottom plates) and i put them back in tightly. It worked for me so its just an idea

There should be three chips, two ddr chips and one chip for the wireless internet, you only have to take out the ddr chips. They should have tiny easy latches on both sides of the chips, don't be afraid to touch them u can at least be a little rough, just pull them out and put them back in.
