Question about Canon PIXMA MX850 Multifunction Printer
I can't seem to make the right cable connections for faxes using: (1) Canon PIXMA MX850 (2) Touchtone Telephony Modem (Comcast Digital Voice) (3) iMac using Airport extreme (if this comes in to play beyond printer connection)
I think i just figured this out.
You need to find the Fax Menu -> Receiver Control Settings
Click the Fax button, then click menu and the left icon should be Receiver Control Settings.
Change to Tel Priority Mode.

Try to check your cable connection maybe its properly inserted in your port. If it continues to appear try reinstalling your printer. When installing follow the steps in the installation. Disconnect the usb cable to the PC prior to installation. You will be ask to attached it to the PC during installation before completing the installation. Check also your network settings maybe some plug ins are disconnected. After installation it needs also to restart the pc so that new changes of the settings will be detected.

They're telling you your hardward doesn't play nice with their hardware. A few suggestions:
Update your printer, and see if any improvement is found:
If that doesn't work, see if your computer has a fax modem that itself can be updated and can support the hardware. Your multifunction printer has a scanner; you can scan in the things you want to fax, then fax from the computer if the computer can fax. This is starting to look like a Dr. Seuss book.
You can also try to learn more about what the problems are and look elsewhere. Your "digital" phone is actually voice over Internet, something VOIP. If you Google for VOIP FAX you'll find some information, like this:

I was searching for an answer to this to make sure my new MX870 is correctly set to receive faxes. Here's one answer I came across:
First set Tel-Priority, turn off incoming ring, turn on manual/auto switch, then check how many seconds it takes for your answering machine to come on, and set it a couple of seconds after that. This should do the trick.
