Building your own home video editing studio

So you have decided that you want to get into editing video but don't know where to start. Here is a quick and short guide to getting started on your home video editing studio. The first thing that you have to decide is what is your budget because equipment can get very pricey very quickly.

Start by determining what you really need right now and what you can do without until you get more serious about your video editing. The priority levels generally go camera, computer, lighting, microphones and editing software.

The camera in my opinion is the most important piece of equipment that you are going to invest in. Simply because if you don't have a camera you will not have any video to work with, depending on what you plan to do with the camera you don't have to go with the highest end camera to get good shots. I do recommend getting a handy-cam because not all DSLR camera's have the ability to focus while shooting video.

Having a computer is up there with the camera because while you can shoot a whole video without editing it, that is the difficult way to shoot video. When it comes to getting a editing program you shouldn't have to, most computers in stores today come with at least a basic editing program. This is why getting the editing software shouldn't be your biggest priority.
With just the camera and computer you can get by but if you want to start getting a little more complicated you can get lighting equipment to take things to the next level. I have seen amateur photographers shooting on a budget using Styrofoam boards to reflect light as a poor man's lighting equipment. Lighting plays a big role in creating mood in a scene but if you are shooting in full lights or during the day you can really get by without it.

Microphones can be argued to be more important than lighting because if there isn't good sound then the film will not be very good. For starting out the built in microphone on your camera should do a decent job, but if you want to have a more professional sounding film then you should look into getting an external microphone. Things get a little complicated when it comes to microphones because there are many different kinds that are used for different purposes.

Finally we have the software for editing video. These programs range from iMovie or Windows Movie maker all the way to Adobe Premeire Pro or Final Cut Pro. When I first started getting into video I was using mostly Windows Movie maker and it was surprisingly a decent program for simple edits. When you want to start getting into more complicated things I recommend doing a search and asking around for recommendations for programs people like before investing time and money in learning a program that you aren't going to enjoy using.

All together just getting started with video editing it doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg. A $300 camera and a $1000 laptop will be more than enough to get your video editing hobby up and running in no time!

Why is that my microphone not working?

First thing to know is, did music play normal? In other words, can you use a computer to listen to the song?
I don't know what you mean is a chat does not work or a sound recording does not work, follow the following steps to try:
1, your microphone in the figure below, there is a high, click on it, there should be two check boxes, how did you uncheck? If you don't check at all, please don't pipe it. <B> above and to the left in the figure
2, you click 'options'-'Properties' in the open 'Properties' dialog box, choose 'single recorded' radio button selected in the box below 'microphone' and then click OK. Recording Control Panel appears (you playback control panel shown in the figure), the interface that appears with your diagram is essentially similar, but note that the mute here becomes a choice, you try to choose a microphone and volume to its maximum, and then see what effect? Similarly the microphone below also has a high, do the first step the same thing and then try.
If you have done the steps above does not help, try this:
right-click the computer speakers at the bottom right of the screen, select 'adjust audio properties' in the open 'sounds and audio devices properties' dialogue box, select the 'voice' tab. Click on the bottom 'test hardware', and then follow the prompts, if passed, it means that your hardware no problem, and the driver was installed. If the tests pass in place, keep an eye on it and then follow the instructions it make any adjustments.
If it is a driver not installed, reinstall it again. If you do not install, I am sorry, it is difficult to express in words clearly, please look for people to help one understand the installation. You can right-click on 'my computer' select 'Properties', and then open the 'hardware' tab, then click on 'Device Manager' in the Device Manager, there should be no yellow or Red Cross or an exclamation point appears, if you have to prove that you a device that is not working properly, of course, does not rule out is your sound card.

Can I add a webcam to my computer and do I need a mic?

Yes, you should be able to add a webcam. If your computer is running XP or later, you can find cameras almost anywhere. For Mac machines the selection is more limited, but Mac-compatible cameras are available. Cameras typically have a microphone built in, so you don't need a separate one. You don't actually need a microphone at all to use a camera, but if you want to use programs like Skype or do video chatting, you need one for the sound. The webcam will come with a disc containing the necessary drivers and installation program, so getting it working is usually not a difficult job.

Does the Behringer xm8500 work on it's own, or do I have to hook it up to something? My daughter wants a microphone she can sing into.

All microphones have to be hooked to an amplifier to work. The socket at the bottom with the 3 pins in it is called an XLR jack. You need to plug an XLR cord into that and then plug it into an amp that has an XLR or 1/4 inch microphone input (using an adapter).

If she just wants it for looks, then no, you don't need to plug it in.

I bought drums at a garage sale. I thought they were for Rockband Wii. I bought Rockband 1 for Wii, but I can't get the drums to sync. The screen keeps indicating it can't detect a microphone,...

If the buttons that you have are 1, 2, A, B, then you have the Rockband drums for Wii (the ones for Xbox have X, Y, A, B). You don't need a microphone to play Rockband, you just need to have a Wii remote on when you start the game. That should get rid of the pesky "Can't Detect Microphone" message and let you get to the main game screen to play the rest of the game. Have fun!

My son passed on to me his computer as he just purchased a new one, Everything was going ok but I deleted a LOT of programmes he had & now I've no sound on my microsoft life cam? I'm about to...

If your sound is working everywhere but not in the webcam, check the settings of your webcam to see if microphone is disabled. Reinstall microsoft life cam software if you cannot make it working. If you don't have the software, go here to download it

When we turn on the lego camera we get an exclamation point in a box and are unable to do anything. What's happening?

We had the same problem and we figured the memory was full. You need to delete the images. Connect your camera to the computer, it will show up on your desktop, double click on the icon, find the images, copy them to your computer (to save them) and then move them into the trash (we have a Mac, I'm not sure if it works the same way on a PC) and then don't forget to empty the trash. We forgot to empty it first and it's important. The camera works great ever since!
