Ok, so I have a friend that got an iphone last February and the screen cracked, which isn't due to abuse on his part, but rather an accessory sold by "the apple store"...Sooo, after talking to a tech at apple HQ, I think my iphone is covered under warranty, since it's less than a year old, and I have the original reciept...BUT: (and this is the Question) I am NOT the person whose name is on the reciept, and I didn't tell the apple tech this, but it will come up...is anyone out there sure or even mildly confident they can tell me if there is any way to salvage this idea of buying my friends broke iphone and getting a new one??? Thanks for your time!...

I Dont understand the last 4 words of your question? But...
If you have "Find Friends" or "Find My iPhone" App installed on the missing iPhone then you can track an iPhone from a computer or another iPhone!
On the iPhone you use Find Friends or Find My iPhone and you will need the username & password from your Apple Account which can be checked with iTunes on your computer.
From a Computer you can use a web browser like Safari to log into your Apple iCloud Account at www.icloud.com where you will see the "Find my iPhone" icon.
Perhaps this is the answer your after!
If the front glass is what's cracked, the part called a digitizer, (which is a thin film layer that reads the skin's touch) could be faulty. WHen the glass is cracked, sometimes it's just a matter of time before the digitizer craps out on you.
has to open the iPhone and replace the part. The
cheapest way is to do it your self and you should get aways with around
$70. The part is available on ebay. If you want to pay to have a
service do it for you there are third party iPhone Screen Repair Services. To try to do it yourself, here's a iPhone Repair guide on how
to disassemble an iPhone. As you can see from the guide, this is not quite that easy. Maybe a
tech savvy friend can do it for you.
. Press-hold the Home button (big circle below the screen) and the Sleep/Wake button (on top of the iPhone) simultaneously. Continue holding both buttons (Ignore the "Slide to power off") until the iPhone shuts off and begins to restart. when you see the silver Apple logo you can let go of the buttons. and then try the phone and see if it is ok now good luck

The most likely reason is that the touch pannel you have installed is defective. One of the printed connectors on the connection tape is not working correctly. Try installing the old screen again and see the results (if available). You can buy replacement touch pannels for Iphone here: http://www.pantallas.biz/epages/wwwpantallasbiz.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/160419/Products/Tactiliphone3g
