I am researching this now. My best guess at this point is to low volume of a fan. If I can't find any more information on this I am going to replace with a higher cuft/min fan.

My processor always makes noises like it grearing up to take off running. Like there is a motor inside of it that will not turn off. Sometimes I have to turn the processor off just to get it to stop. Is this overheating or what?

1. Take note of seemingly random computer crashes. If they tend to occur after the computer has been running for a while, they could be the result of overheating. As computers get faster, they have a tendency to run hotter.
2. Check to make sure the vents in the computer case aren't blocked and there's good air circulation around the computer.
3. If your computer has a fan, remove the computer case with a screwdriver, then turn on the computer briefly to see if the fan is turning. If it isn't, you'll need to replace it or the power supply.

4. If the inside of the computer case looks like Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl, clean things up by turning off the computer and using a can of compressed air (available at electronics stores) to blow dust off of circuit boards, chips, the fan and anything else that looks dirty. Vacuums and dust rags are a bad idea, however, because they can build up static charges and zap your chips.

I am having the same problem with the 740. When you put it to some hard processing the heat sink fan starts to spin up faster and faster, then the system shuts down. I am researching to see if anyone else has found out what is going on. This is a new box, less than 2 months old.

If your computer is over heating then it has a problem somewhere. So you must try and pinpoint it. Check your fans inside your computer to see if they are running at full speed. Check power supply fans to see if they are running at full speed. Check any hardware devise to see if it is hot by lightly touching it after shut down. If any thing seems to hot or practiclly burns you you may need to replace that hard ware item.

firstly, a definition of overheating - this is when a piece of hardware inside your computer generates enough heat to permanantly damage the componenet, the most vulnerable part to overheating is the processor, it is unlikely any other part of the computer will overheat.

the more work the processor does the more likely it is to overheat, e.g if you are playing the very latest games if you are just using programs like word there is very little chance it will overheat.

Make sure your computer is not located above or near a radiator and not in front of a window (the sun will heat it up) this will help prevent overheating if your using proccesor heavy applications like the latest games, it might also minimally extend the computers longevity .also make sure it isnt in a very confined space -doing this will ensure the hot air fanned out of your computer gets away from the computer and dosent heat it up-.

The following method dosent involve opening the case and you can find out your processors temperature, though it might seem a little complex. you will need to know how to download things.

you should be able to find out the "overheat limit or cuttout limit" form you processor's manual (if it has one) of from the manufactures webiste.

you can then use this free software (link at bottom of post, if you can't click it copy and paste it into your browser)called sisoft sandra-lite (lite is the free version)to monitor various temperatures in your computer IF the computer has an enviroment chip (and i think it would because i have the same computer)

once you have downloaded and installed then opened the software go to the "tools" tab and double clikc on "enviroment monitor" a new window should open.

This window is the introduction, click next...
then in the "type" box select "make choices and generate report"...
write at least one character (it dosent matter which) into the white space, click next...
on the delivery tab select "display on screen" click next...
select an appropraite time interval between each measuerment taken-i suggest 6 seconds- (the program will take the readings and generate a graph)click ok (the big green tick)

you will then be shown a lot of data you should look at "CPU1 temperature" and/or "CPU2 temperature" if it is over the limit you found in the manual/webiste it is overheating.

fixing this is even more complex than finding out, but is ESSENTIAL you fix it or your computer may be damage your permanantly.

there is a program that i got that checks the speed of all your fans and also tells you the temperatures of your hard drive and temperature sensor temps.
it also has several other features like setting your fans speeds.
the name of this program is Speedfan, and you can see the website and download it here:
