firstly, a definition of overheating - this is when a piece of hardware inside your computer generates enough heat to permanantly damage the componenet, the most vulnerable part to overheating is the processor, it is unlikely any other part of the computer will overheat.
the more work the processor does the more likely it is to overheat, e.g if you are playing the very latest games if you are just using programs like word there is very little chance it will overheat.
Make sure your computer is not located above or near a radiator and not in front of a window (the sun will heat it up) this will help prevent overheating if your using proccesor heavy applications like the latest games, it might also minimally extend the computers longevity .also make sure it isnt in a very confined space -doing this will ensure the hot air fanned out of your computer gets away from the computer and dosent heat it up-.
The following method dosent involve opening the case and you can find out your processors temperature, though it might seem a little complex. you will need to know how to download things.
you should be able to find out the "overheat limit or cuttout limit" form you processor's manual (if it has one) of from the manufactures webiste.
you can then use this free software (link at bottom of post, if you can't click it copy and paste it into your browser)called sisoft sandra-lite (lite is the free version)to monitor various temperatures in your computer IF the computer has an enviroment chip (and i think it would because i have the same computer)
once you have downloaded and installed then opened the software go to the "tools" tab and double clikc on "enviroment monitor" a new window should open.
This window is the introduction, click next...
then in the "type" box select "make choices and generate report"...
write at least one character (it dosent matter which) into the white space, click next...
on the delivery tab select "display on screen" click next...
select an appropraite time interval between each measuerment taken-i suggest 6 seconds- (the program will take the readings and generate a graph)click ok (the big green tick)
you will then be shown a lot of data you should look at "CPU1 temperature" and/or "CPU2 temperature" if it is over the limit you found in the manual/webiste it is overheating.
fixing this is even more complex than finding out, but is ESSENTIAL you fix it or your computer may be damage your permanantly.
