My Whirlpool Mark Series also makes a very loud clunking noise for about two seconds after the compressor stops. The fridge is about 23 years old.

My 10year old Whirlpool, top freezer fridge makes a clunking sound when it shuts off..also, there is a small amount of water collecting at the bottom of the fridge under the crisper bins and the water if freezing. The freezer and fridge both appear to be keeping good tempertures.

Start looking for another unit. The compressor is going out. It is a sealed unit and can not be repaired but can be replaced. Replacing it will be costly and you still will have an old unit that may develope other time related problems.

it sounds like the compressor insides are loose and you will be needing a new compressor, but just check and make sure the rubber mounting feet on the outer compressor base where its mounted to the refrigerator base are all tight and the rubber shocks are all good

SOURCE: Refrigerator making a whinning noise.

sutty, you have a 2 speed DC evaporator motor in this model. There should be at least 60 seconds between any fan speed changes. On the back side of the refrigerator you have a main board. Unplug J2 connector on the board. Check for 13VDC between pins j2-3 and j2-8, then check for 8 to 13VDC between j2-3 and j2-4. If the voltage is correct I would suspect the evaporator motor. If the voltage is incorrect, then the problem is in the main board. Pins read from left to right 1 through 8. Catriver.

Condenser fan might be hitting the cardboard panel or the compressor is loose at the base.

We have an 11 year old fisher-paykel fridge .For past 6 months several times a day it makes a loud knocking noise

If this noise happens when the compressor turns on and shuts off it is called a compressor knock. All the internal workings of the compressor are supported by springs, over time the springs wear out and become weak. When the compressor stops or starts the tourq causes the internal parts to hit aginst the casing of the compressor. Sounds like a clunk clunk clunk noise. If you can deal with the noise do not go out and replace the compressor cause it will work just fine like that.

My Kenmore refrigerator model 77188791 is making a clunking noise when it shuts down. I believe it may be a compressor, if so, approx. how much will it cost including labor?

That's usually mounts inside the compressor. It could still last awhile so if you can put up with the noise just wait for it to quit before replacing the compressor or getting a new fridge.

The compressor makes a big clunk clunk sound when it shuts off

Hi,
The compressor motor mount is broken and that allows the compressor to flop around and clunk when shutting down.
That also allows it to twist and turn as it starts...
this will have to be fixed before the refrigerant piping breaks...

My refrigerator is about 15 years old and has made a clunking noise when it shuts off since I moved into my home many years ago, but has always kept food cold/frozen. Recently, the clunk noise is getting a...

The compressor is sitting on springs inside a metal case. When it stops, the centrifical force is absorbed by these springs. If one or more springs become weak or break, the compressor hits against the outer case a time or two. (CLUNK CLUNK clunk) There is really nothing you can do about it, short of replacing the compressor. (read big bucks) NOTE: If you take a new compressor and give it a shake, you will hear the same clunk. If the noise is really bothering you, I'd say after 15 years, it's time to move that refrig to the basement and get a new energy star model for your kitchen. (the old one most likely has several more years worth of clunking before it truely dies)

Refrigerator makes fairly loud noises of a clunking kind but runs and stays cold.

Clunking noises usually comes from the rapid stop of the compressor. It will not hurt a thing. The rubber grommets which the compressor sit on for cushioning, have most likely hardened and are transferring the noise to the frame or casing. The compressor runs at 3600 rpm's and when you tell it to stop on a dime, it can't. The result is a couple of clunks or so. Also check the drip pan for improper positioning. I have seen them make noise also.

Kenmore fridge, about 8 years old, making noise

The compressor on your fridge is mounted on rubber grametts and inside the dome the internal parts the do the pumping of the refrigerant are mounted on springs. When a compressor gets old some people complain about two much vibrating, this could be the rubber grommets the support the compressor. When one of the support springs inside the compressor is broken it will have a distinct rapping sound when the compressor shuts off. There isn`t anything you can do about this, short of replacing the compressor. It will eventually get worse untill something is seriously broken inside the compressor and the compressor will die. You may want to consider replacing the compressor now or purchase a new fridge. You will need to consider the cost of both and the age of the fridge" Is it worth repairing?". You can actualy find a repair company in your area from this site if you like, and compare the costs.I hope I have helped explained the problem well enough for you. I will help you as much as I can.
