Remove the color cartridge. Make sure the contacts in the print carriage are clean. Chek to ensure the contacts on the cartridge are clean. Reinsert cartridge.

If it's the same as my 6480... turn it off then lift up the top so you can see where the cartridges should go.
Next turn it on with the top still open and the cartridge holder should move into the load position.

Can you find a friend with a similar HP printer, i.e., one that accepts the same model-number of ink-cartridge? If the cartridge gives the same error-message in the other printer, it's time to responsibly recycle your "dead" cartridge, and give the brand-new cartridge to your friend, for his/her usage.
