Question about Epson Stylus C84 InkJet Printer

8 Answers

I can't get the color function to work on my Epson Stylus C84

Pictures print totally without color. The color lines don't even appear when I run the print head test. I have all full color cartridges in place.

The first suggestion did not correct the problem.
The nozzle check still produces only the black lines, but no color lines at all. Initial complaint: I can't get any color at all to printed pictures, etc.

  • geokngfsh Dec 18, 2008

The second suggestion did not resolve the problem either. The advanced printing preferences do not have the "black ink only" option selected; but I still cannot get any color.

Ifcolor or black is missing, the problem could be due to a softwaresetting (the printer software or your application may have been set toprint black only) or the printer’s condition.

I have to ask the merely obvious as it is often overlooked... did the printer print colour before.... and have you replaced the ink recently... if so... did you remove the plastic covering/tape that is on it for shipping purposes ?

Let me guess, you just replaced the color cartridges and suddenly lost color output and not a single drop of it on the paper.

you're familiar with the windows test page, head cleaning process, the printer driver is not set to black only.

it's service bound (it's a C84).

just in case you need this:

******************************
Black Ink Only Mode
To select black ink only mode and conserve color ink when printing only text documents, please do the following:

In Windows 98/ME/2000:

1) Go to START, SETTINGS, PRINTERS.
2) RIGHT CLICK on your Epson printer name; left click on PROPERTIES. (PRINTING PREFERENCES in Windows 2000.)
3) Go to the MAIN tab. Click the ADVANCED button in bottom right corner.
4) In ADVANCED settings, place a check beside BLACK INK ONLY.
5) Click APPLY then OK.

In Windows XP:

1) Go to START, CONTROL PANEL, PRINTERS AND OTHER HARDWARE or PRINTERS AND FAXES. (Select VIEW INSTALLED PRINTERS under PRINTER TASKS if no printers appear.)
2) RIGHT CLICK on your Epson printer name; left click PRINTING PREFERENCES.
3) On the MAIN tab, click the ADVANCED button in bottom right corner.
4) Place a check beside BLACK INK ONLY.
5) Click OK.

Remember to repeat these instructions and remove the check from BLACK INK ONLY when printing photos or color images.

************************
Cartridge Reclamp
Please try the following:

1. Make sure the printer is turned on, and not printing. The POWER light should be on, but not flashing.
2. Lower the OUTPUT tray, and open the PRINTER COVER.
3. Press the INK CARTRIDGE REPLACEMENT button. The print heads will move to the REPLACEMENT POSITION.
4. Open the CARTRIDGE COVER. Pinch the front and back tabs of the first cartridge, and remove it from the printer.
5. Place it back into the holder. Push it down gently into the holder, until the cartridge clicks into place.
6. Repeat steps 4-5 for each cartridge. Close the CARTRIDGE COVER once all of the necessary ink cartridges are re-seated.
7. Close the printer's cover. Press the INK CARTRIDGE REPLACEMENT button. The print head will move, and charging of the ink deliver system will begin. Charging takes about one minute.

Did you install all of the drivers and the monitoring application on the disk? there should be some software that came with it. And is this the only printer that is installed, if not printers can really be a pain in the neck, to diagnose. If you have other printers when you look in the device manager, deelete them, they will interfere and cause all sorts of problems down the line. You should only have 1 printer in printer and fax folder. The other old trick is to uninstall the printer from the device manager, and allow it to re-install from the re-boot. Go thru these things first before we get technical, as I mentioned these things can be a pain in the neck and it alwys ends up like one of thos light bulbs going off in the cartoons, it's just a matter of going thru thr basics. If the printer worked yesterday, you could try a "restore" and go back to when it did work. If it's new that won't do much good so skip it, thanks, peace, Gym

The most likely problem is a bad ink cartridge. It's pretty common on generic ink cartridges. But it could be a failing print head or main board. Or just a clogging problem. You could try a few print head cleanings and see if that helps.

If it gets worse then I would suspect the ink cartridge again.

Is this a brand new printer? In the printer settings, you don't have a box set as black and white only or print in gray scale (This would be in advanced settings)

Please let me know asap

Is this a brand new printer? If so, then there might be something wrong with the software in the printer. If you uninstall and reinstall the printer and it still doesn't work, take it back and exchange it. You just got the bad apple then.

Try first removing cartridges and putting them back in place, and also perform a head / nozzle cleanup procedure from printer software tools, do this a couple of times.

If that did not correct the problem, it means that the printhead is clogged or faulty, in that case you need to remove the printhead and leave it in isopropyl alcohol overnight, if this still does not work, replace the printhead.

An alternative solution can be buying an Epson cleaning cartridge, that is a cartridge filled with isopropyl alcohol and cleaning solution, see: EPSON CLEANING CARTRIDGES

Re: C84 I'm using generic ink, but the red

I have learned from experience, that Epson does not like generic ink. You must use Epson Genuine Cartridges. Hopefully, you haven't screwed up the printer, like I did. I did try cleaning the heads and doing everything possible. Use 2 cartridges of ech set, for cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. ......But Nothing.
Had to go out and purchase a new printer.;
Good Luck :0(

Not printing

If you've just bought a C84 today then you've been sold a second (or even third) hand unit which is clogged solid.

To resolve this you're going to need to clean the printheads which is something I've described here

It's a different printer but the same process applies.

Hope that helps.

Won't print unless all ink cartridges have ink.

Try changing it in the properties section under device settings
or go to color management if you have it and change the setting to black only,.

Epson Stylus C84

Sorry but It uses Durabrite ink which tends to turn into hard gel if not printed at least once a week. Its less painful and expensive to just throw the printer out and buy a new one. I recommend the canon PIXMA ip3500. It lets you remove the printhead for cleaning unlike the Epson. If you want to try your luck at unclogging the printer heres a link to a unclogging kit but be warned that results are not guaranteed!

The durabrite inks that EPSON invented is brilliant when you print pictures but it tends to harden very easily

Printer does not print

An ink supplier advised turning off the printer for 15 minutes, turn it on and try again. That worked once. Next time he suggested turning off printer, removing all cartridges, waiting 15 minutes, replacing cartridges. I couldn't do this without turning the printer back on and going through the replace cartridges routine. Now the nozzle check routine printed magenta and yellow only. I've run the head cleaner a number of times with no success.  Hope one of these suggestions works for you.

The C82 in addition to clogging also has a problem where the waste ink hose which is supposed to remove excess ink (so the printer dosent get clogged) gets disconnected and so the printer clogs even more. The C84 had this glitch fixed but alot of good that did!
