Question about Honeywell CT87B ROUND HEATING&COOLING MECHANICAL THERMOSTAT - WHITE Heater

1 Answer

Thermostat T87 My gas furnace is constantly turning on (2 minutes) and off. Is there some kind of setting (maybe the delay setting) that I need to change so that it will stay on longer. This can't be good for my heating bill and I know it's not good for the comfort level in my home.

How old is unit? Sounds like it may be short cycling which could be do to it going off on limit.

SOURCE: T87 thermostat heat doesn't stay on long

is this truly a T-87 round mechanical or is it the new electronic version? If it is gold in color it's the old tried and true, if it's white it could be either. Pull the outside ring straight out. If it is a t-87 mechanical you will see a mecury bulb setting on a spring on top. On the lower righ (4 to 5 o'clock) is a heat anticipater adjustment. Take the brass poiter and slide it to the left as far as it will go this should increase the duration of cyles and make them less frequent. This is if the problem is truly thermostat related. If it is the electronic version of the T-87 and it displays this behavior only when it is very cold out, it is a programming glitch that they were informed of 2 weeks after it came out, because I told them. If this is what you have purchase a new thermostat and replace that junk that is defacing your wall.

Gas furnace short cycles 2 minutes or less. Multiple troubleshoot steps and replaced components - no help. Any advice?

I did not see that your indoor fan motor started. Near your indoor fan motor there is a temperature switch that is called the fan delay relay. On a temperature rise the relay shuts a contact that turns on the indoor fan motor. If the contact does not close the high temperature limit will shut the gas controls off like your getting. A fan delay relay also allows the fan to run a minute or so to carry away the remaining heat in the furnace and help cool the furnace down. The fan delay relay is normally mounted in a recessed area in the fire wall of the furnace plate. I have also seen them on the top of the furnace heat exchanger. Anyway, the fan delay relay will probably not be available on a sunday, so temporarily until parts are available, try turning the thermostat fan from auto to on and try the furnace again. By turning on the fan to on the high temp limit will not shut you down again.

I have had high temp limit change there trip points, but you said you bypassed it and did the same thing.

Another cause could be using the wrong type of air filter. The new pleated filters sold block to much air flow. If air mass flow rate drops the difference in temperatur go up and when the difference in temperature go up, it gets nearer the high limit and causes it to trip. All pleated filters drop normal air flow through ducts by at least 35%. To make your air duct system work properly use the what is called throw away filters which cost about 1/3 the cost of the pleated filter. Remember to either clean or change the throw away filter monthly to reduce dirt being drawn into your duct system.
Hope this helps.

I wish I was a furnace expert but I will give a push in the right direction. When a gas/electric fan runs it has two speeds. When you turn on the FAN ON switch it should run at the slower speed. If it doesn't turn on or turn off again when you turn it back you have a wiring problem or a thermostat problem. Make sure the thermostat is compatible with your unit and wired properly (on both ends). The other time the fan runs is "in session" when heat or cooling is applied to the system. It should run until the system finishes the cycle then a bit more (30 seconds or 1 minute) to blow the treated air completely through the ducts. If it doesn't stop then you may have a bad fan time delay or relay. Check parts for your model and various appliance repair site online.

The heat come on turn off but fan will not shout off.

if you have a gas or oil furnace then the limit control is probably bad. If you have electric heat or a heat pump then the sequencer is probably bad. But first make sure the thermostat is not set to "FAN". The thermostat must be set to "AUTO". Many systems have a time delay on the fan to capture the remaining heat after it completes a heating cycle. Usually several minutes.

Whats' so hard is the Honeywell thermostat has a built in 1@ differential. It is not adjustable.
You might ask your installer about a time delay relay installed in the furnace to break the thermostat heat wire (usually white wire).
Most time delay relays are 90 seconds. But that might be enough to reduce the furnace cycling.

I have a new York hybrid heat pump/gas furance

Did they check the sensor in the plenum. You are suppose to have bonnet sensor to switch from heat heat pump to gas whaen it is to cold for the heat pump. The bonnet sensor may be to bad. The unit is cycling ever five minutes because it may have five minute time delay.

Bryant programmable thermostat will switch on furnace

Turn the power off to the Air handler unit.
Remove the thermostat from the wall, (Just the face part).
Look on the back side of the thermostat and verify that the jumpers are set to electric and not gas, otherwise the fan will not run during heat mode, they come from the factory usually set for gas.
If this is a electric heater this will solve your problem, If it is gas then it will be more detailed. Once you put it back on keep in mind that most thermostats have a 3-5 minute delay so just give it a little time and the fan should then work once you have the jumpers in the correct position.

Hey John, man that ole T87 has been around for a hundred years and I have installed many of them, but I cant remember the letters on the wiring. Seems to me that it is R-W-Y, any way you will use the R and W. I have a t87 at home still in the box and I could wait till I got home to help you but Im sure its the R and W terminal. Dont forget to set the heat anticipator. Set it the same as the current value of your gas or oil valve.
