Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop
My burner is not working properly. It burns maybe 1 out of 10 or 15 blank cds. I'm almost thru $50 of wasted blanks.
If I use iTunes, for example, it says: CHECKING MEDIA... for about a minute and then nothing. I also have a Sony Sound Forge music editing program. When I'm ready to burn with that, it just replies NO DISC.
Any ideas? I saw a previous similar question, about an E310 dvd problem, I got all the way to the Registry Editor, but don't know what folder to look in under CLASS.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Check this out... You might be in PIO which is a transfer mode which is slower than what you really need... Your IDE channels where probably put in PIO from transfer errors so you might have IDE cables that are bunk. Also download Nero demo and see if it works any better.
Information and fix for PIO: http://winhlp.com/node/10
You could try this to see if it is your Hardware/Software/OS if you have Two CD's/DVD's:
Download Ubuntu 8.10 for your type of PC from http://www.ubuntu.com
Then when you get into the OS and the Desktop is up, open a terminal like this:
Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal [enter]
sudo apt-get install k3b [enter]
This app will let you test your burner in linux to see if it is a windows problem.
Dont worry this OS wont touch your HDD (windows) unless you click install.

Buy a new burner, its half the cost of those 50 you alredy waisted.
It sounds like the laser in your burner is...almost died!
Good luck to you
BTW, never ever change anything in the register if you dont know what you doing, even a smal change can cause major problems in the register and you OS may never start up again,
