First a word of warning .... the capacitors in power supply units hold their charge for an awful long time so if you must start disassembling it leave it at least a week for the voltage to dissipate.

Next ...what exactly are you trying to do inside the power supply? I have replaced fans on occassion but further than that, unless you are a qualified electronics engineer, i would question the validity of doing anything.

Why not just buy a new PSU? ...they are not expensive?

Compaq 1420 nx turns on then turns off immediately

A brief primer if I may;

Electrolytic Capacitors are used on the motherboard, and in the Power Supply, in the Compaq Presario 1420nx Desktop PC;

HP Support > Compaq Presario SR1420nx Desktop PC > Main Support page,

Product information > Product specifications > Motherboard Specifications, P4GV-LA (Guppy),

Scroll down to the motherboard Photo.

General example of a Switched-Mode Power Supply, (SMPS), case open,

Personal computers have used this style of Power Supply, for quite some time.
The one in your computer is just an ATX style, and is the type used in MANY personal computers. (Not Small Form Factor, however)

THIS IS NOT an invite to open your Power Supply, and attempt repair.
The capacitors used are Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors.
The blue ones marked by the letter B, are high voltage. MAY have Up To 100 Volts stored.

Your fingers touch the terminals on the bottom, of one of these babies; the shock can be BAD to FATAL!

Your fingers touch a circuit, that one or more capacitors are in, and the shock can be BAD to FATAL.

There is a Proper method to discharge them, BEFORE working on the unit. Am not going to post.
(Does NOT involve a metal screwdriver, or other metallic object! Good way to have hot molten metal spray in your face!)

The method of repair is to REPLACE.

Inside an Electrolytic Capacitor is Electrolytic Paste.
This paste breaks down over time. Chemical composition breaks down.

Computer engineers know this, and use capacitors that are rated at twice, or 200 percent; of what is needed.
This way when the capacitor breaks down to 50 percent good, it is still 100 percent good for the application it is used in.

Unplug an electronic unit from power, and the chemical composition of the paste breaks down more rapidly. All electronic units need a trickle charge when being stored. (Pawn shops know this)

To summarize;
FOLLOW Anti-Static Precautions after unplugging your computer from power, BEFORE reaching inside your computer. (Don't know, and would like to? Post in a Comment)

Check the 'caps' on the motherboard.
Note* Sometimes the Electrolytic Paste dries up, and shows NO outward visual signs of failure.

'Caps' on motherboard found to be good, suspect the Power Supply.
I can guide you in testing it, or you may have a KNOWN to be good, Compatible power supply, from a working computer that you can borrow for a test unit.

Compaq Presario SR1123WM desktop won't turn on

Hello Kim.
When you press the power button, is there no life?
The PC may be set up for manual start instead of auto restart after power is restored.
Otherwise a surge may have blown the PSU.
Mine's not a Compaq but I'll research what the green light is.
Could be a modem....

Brown power supply and there is no replacement .

Almost all computers use one of two form factors (shapes, essentially) of power supply. You should be able to buy an aftermarket one suitable for your computer. If the power supply is smaller than normal, any computer repair shop should be able to order one in.

Generally in the computer service industry nobody repairs power supplies; they are simply not worth the parts and difficulty in pinpointing the problem.

My compaq presario 2100 will not start up the power cord plugs in and when you wiggle it it somtimes would work but now wont at all. thank

1. You possibly have a damage ac cord
or you have damaged connecting plug at the PC .
2. try to obtain a new AC cord.
3. Another possibility is the power supply for the PC needs replacement.
4. A PC technician can determine this for you.
Contact Compaq for repair rates because most likely this is a special power supplied system.

Compaq presario power supply

You probably need a new power supply. Check the capacitors inside the power supply, they're probably popped. If they're not popped, bring it to a computer repair shop and have them test it. Your board could be bad, too.

Flashing Green Light on Power BESTEC Power Supply

Hi. NO, *********** board is not fried. I am not sure what the problem is but I do know how to fix it. It is usually casued by power outages (even if you have UPS supply).

1. TAKE OUT THE ELECTRICITY LEAD TO THE COMPUTER. Look inside the computer and find the bunch of wires coming from the power supply unit (the box thing at the top with the fan and all those colouted wires!).

2. Find where these wires run into a plastic connector and plug into the mother board. Unplug it.

3. Now plug the electicity lead back into the computer. The light should now stay ON.

4. Plug in the connector again... and boot up. Leave it run a while to convince it!

5. Repeat this process if it does not work first time.

This should fix your problem . It works for me when I get this problem.

No power in the pc

It does sound like the power supply. Try flipping the power swich in the back, by the cord, then press the power button on the front again. But most likely, the power supply will need to be replace. If you do happen to get it come back on, take the cover off and verify the CPU fan is spinning, if it's not, that could be the problem as well.
