if the set is now working,its just a matter of resetting the lamp-hour counter in the on-screen menus.be sure to clean any filters associated with the fan which cools the bulb,or your new lamp wont last long!
If you have a voltage meter you can pull the bulb out and check for continuity by placing the probes on the power plugs of the bulb. If you have continuity the bulb should be good, and it may be the lamp ballast.
This sounds like your bulb has burned out or has failed. Do you see a yellow or red light? If so, that is the status indicator that is telling you that your tv needs to be serviced. You can find a replacement bulb online. It is a fairly easy precess and you could probably do it yourself. If you need help with that, I have solved several "how to replace the bulb" questions.
