If you mean the drivers for your SATA harddisk, you should have gotten a CD with your motherboard that contains drivers they might be labeled as RAID, sata, or EIDE controller. when you click that it should prompt you for a floppy disk to put the drivers on, you need to put a floppy disk in drive A and then extract the RAID drivers to your floppy, when installing windows press F6 at the begining of the installation and it will act like it didn't work for a minute and then it will pop up asking you something, you press S and then you will be asked to insert your floppy disk. It might ask you if you want to install the x86 or x64 drivers, x86 is 32bit and x64 is 64 bit, if you don't know which you are using it should tell you somewhere on your windows disk. another option is to get a sata controller that isn't part of your motherboard, it would be a pci-e card and it would come with drivers. I don't know where you could download your drivers from because I think the driver you need is specific to the type of SATA controller your motherboard has in it, but I do know that seagate and western digital have sata drivers available as well for their harddrives so I don't know what to tell you. best shot is your motherboard driver CD.

you need to press f6 at the begining of the windows installation and then you will see when to press S. but if your motherboard CD won't work then try to find the drivers on the manufacturers website, most of them have the driver downloads available online. then you'll just need to get a floppy and put the drivers on there.

Hi,
The Dell Dimension XPS GEN2 has support for both, IDE and SATA standards. Your Maxtor is SATA drive, you can use any SATA drive as replacement. You mentioned that the OS no longer find the drive, make sure that you load SATA drivers at your Windows XP reinstallation, maybe your old drive is not defective only not recognized in the installation process. You can download the floppy image with required drivers here, see SATA drivers section. When you start Windows installation, at the Windows Setup Screen you should see, at the bottom of the screen, a message saying "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver." At that point press the F6 button and when the next screen appears press S key to specify an additional device. Select the drivers from the provided list(to load all drivers from the disk, beacuse I don't know which is yours as I don't know the content of the disk, repeat steps to specify additional device), after drivers load your hard drive should be recognized and you can continue installing the Windows XP operating system. Ignore these steps if your hard was already tested and confirmed that is defective. Good luck!
If this is the solution for your problem, please rate my post, otherwise give us more details.

Regards,
Andras

Can't install windows XP on a new 500GB Hard Disk

go to the manufacturers website and see what bios updates there are ? If any relate to recognizing hard drive capacity then it will be worth while installing the update onto the motherboard.

If not then check your motherboard for enabling LBA and if you read the manual it should explain what each option is for.

Also might be worth while slip streaming your xp installation disc with the sata drivers for your motherboard ( the sata drivers you can get from your motherboard manufacturers website, download and extract them and then use nlite to combine the sata drivers with the xp disc and re burn the xp disc ensuring to make it bootable )

Nlite website

Seeing as you are combining drivers it may be worth while getting all the other drivers ie network card, graphics, audio etc and combing that with your bootable xp disc.

Motherboard stop recognize SATA HDD after BIOS reset (default)

You'll likely need either a driver disk for your SATA drive to be recognized by Windows XP during installation or Windows XP with Service Pack 2 built in to install without a driver disk.

Creating a Windows XP installation CD with Service Pack 2 or "SP2" built in is fairly straight forward. This is called "slip streaming". Step - by - step directions can be found in the following links:

SECOND HARD DRIVE NOT RECOGNIZED

Change the settings of you IDE drives in your BIOS. Set your secondary boot device to HDD1. Also make sure that your primary HDD is set to master and the secondary HDD is slave. The jumper is found at the back of the hard drive where you connect the power and IDE cables. Try this and post back as to how it went..

160gb samsung sata II

The PC is not seeing the Hard drive. check the jumper pin for the setting on the hard drive. If you have one HD then it should be set to master or cable select. Reboot and the cmos will see the HD. If not check the cables, and last check to see if the controller driver is installed for the motherboard. The controller is where the cable connects.

well, you must provide more information, for example WHAT MESSAGE you are gettin in that windows installation.

Things I need to know:
1. Are u installing WinXP for the firs time?
2. Are u using a NEW HD?
3. Is that HD SATA type? or SATA2?
4. do you know what partition and formatting is?

I will help you if you provide me that information. For now I will assume the following and tell you what to do in that supposed case:

you get a message that tells you tha you have no Hard Disk or that system cannot detect any HDs... If thats so and you are using a SATA Hard Disk it surely means that your motherboard does not offer automatic driving for SATA so you will need to load the driver for that SATA HD from a CD or a Floppy that must come with your motherboard... I you dont have this you can download the driver from Internet... If your HD is IDE, NON SATA you have a different problem so Please let me know, I will be waiting for more precise information.
