If you are referring to the STARTUP tab of MSCONFIG in Windows XP, you can start without any of startup programs. You can see what comes up, and after you can check back only what you need. Good luck!

FLASHING BIOS - THE PROCEDURE

BIOS Update Procedure

All latest Motherboards today, ensure that upgrades are easily obtained by incorporating the system BIOS in a FLASH Memory component. With
FLASH BIOS, there is no need to replace an EPROM component. Once downloaded, the upgrade utility fits on a floppy disc allowing the user to save, verify and update the system BIOS. A hard drive or a network drive can also be used to run the newer upgrade utilities. However, memory managers can not be installed while upgrading.
Most pre-Pentium motherboards do not have a Flash BIOS. The following instructions therefore do not apply to these boards. If your motherboard does not have a Flash BIOS (EEPROM) you will need to use an EPROM programmer to re-program the BIOS chip. See your dealer for more information about
this.

Please read the following instructions in full before starting a Flash BIOS upgrade:

A. Create a Bootable Floppy (in DOS)

•With a non-formatted disk, type the following:

format a:/s

•If using a formatted disk, type:

sys a:

This procedure will ensure a clean boot when you

are flashing the new BIOS.

B. Download the BIOS file

•Download the correct BIOS file by clicking on

the file name of the BIOS file you wish to download.

•Save the BIOS file and the Flash Utility file in the boot disk you have created. Unzip the BIOS file and the flash utility file. If you don't have an "unzip" utility, download the WinZip from www.winzip.com or www.pkware.com. Most CD ROMs found in computer magazines, have a shareware version of WinZip on them.

•You should have extracted two files:

Flash BIOS utility eg: flash7265.exe (for example)

BIOS eg: 6152J900.bin (example)

Use the latest flash utility available unless otherwise specified (either on the BIOS update page or in the archive file). This information is usually provided.

C. Upgrade the System BIOS

During boot up, write down the old BIOS version because you will need to use it for the BIOS backup file name.Place the bootable floppy disk containing the BIOS file and the Flash Utility in drive a, and reboot the system in MS-DOS, preferably Version 6.22

•At the A:> prompt, type the corresponding Flash

BIOS utility and the BIOS file with its extension.

For example:

flash625 615j900.bin

•From the Flash Memory Writer menu, select "Y" to

"Do you want to save BIOS?" if you want to save (back up) your current BIOS (strongly recommended), then type the name of your current BIOS and its extension after FILE NAME TO SAVE:

eg: a:\613J900.bin

Alternatively select "N" if you don't want to save your current BIOS. Beware, though, that you won't be able to recover from a possible failure.

•Select "Y" to "Are you sure to program?"

•Wait until it displays "Message: Power Off or

Reset the system"

Once the BIOS has been successfully loaded, remove the floppy disk and reboot the system. If you write to BIOS but cannot complete theprocedure, do not switch off, because the computer will not be able to boo, and you will not be given another chance to flash. In this case leave your system on until you resolve the problem (flashing BIOS with old file is a possible solution, provided you've made a backup before)

Make sure the new BIOS version has been loaded properly by taking note of the BIOS identifier as the system is rebooting.

For AMI BIOS

Once the BIOS has been successfully loaded, remove the floppy disk and reboot the system holding the "END" key prior to power on until you enter CMOS setup. If you do not do this the first time booting up after upgrading the BIOS, the system will hang.

BIOS Update Tips

Note:
1.Make sure never to turn off or reset your computer during the flash process. This will corrupt the BIOS data. We also recommend that you make a copy of your current BIOS on the bootable floppy so you can reflash it if you need to.

(This option is not available when flashing an AMI BIOS).

2. If you have problems installing your new BIOS please check the following:

Have you done a clean boot?
In other words, did you follow the above procedure for making a bootable floppy? This ensures that when booting from "A" there are no device drivers on the diskette. Failing to do a clean boot is the most common cause for getting a "Memory Insufficient" error message when attempting to flash a
BIOS.If you have not used a bootable floppy, insure a clean boot either

a) pressing F5 during bootup

b) by removing all device drivers on the CONFIG.SYS including the HIMEM.SYS. Do this by

using the EDIT command.

Have you booted up under DOS?
Booting in Windows is another common cause for getting a "Memory Insufficient" error message when attempting to flash a BIOS. Make sure to boot up to DOS with a minimum set of drivers.

Important:
Booting in DOS does not mean selecting "Restart computer in MS-DOS Mode" from Windows98/95 shutdown menu or going to Prompt mode in WindowsNT, but rather following the above

procedure (format a: /s and rebooting from a:\).Have you entered the full file name of the flash utility and the BIOS plus its extension?
Do not forget that often you will need to add a drive letter (a:\) before flashing the BIOS.

Example: when asked for file name of new BIOS file which is on your floppy disk, in case you're working from c:\ your will need to type

a:\615j900.bin, rather than 615j900.bin only.

Hi guys, my notebook 0xc00000e9 this problem and how I want to save or return all my program really work? I need to go back but I do not want to format? need to save my back as folders? I hope you...

This error indicates a corrupt registry. Luckily, when Windows is installed, a pristine copy of the registry hives is also installed and it remains untouched...replacing your corrupt registry hives with these ones will allow you to boot your operating system again. You may have to reinstall a few programs and drivers but all of your data will remain intact and you really won't lose anything. I will describe the process to you. I will also include instructions on how to back up the current registry in case you want to go back to it for any reason.

First you will need to locate the Windows install disc. If you don't have one you can borrow one as you will not need a key to perform the steps.

Put in the disc and perform the steps necessary to get your computer to boot to it.

Once you are the "Welcome to Setup" screen, press R to go into the Recovery Console.

Enter the administrator password when prompted

Tell the program what installation of Windows you would like to recover.

Now for the commands

md tmp (this creates a directory labeled tmp)

These 5 commands will make a copy of your current registry hives and back them up to the tmp directory. Type these in first. ENSURE you back them all up.

copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

These 5 commands will delete the current, corrupt registry hives.

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

These 5 commands will copy the pristine, uncorrupted hives into your system.

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

Once you have entered your last command type exit to leave the recovery console and your computer should restart.

If you want to put the old registry back for any reason, simply follow the same steps but instead delete the current registry and replace it with the files that you placed in the tmp directory. Ensure that you remove the .bak extension from the file when you copy them over.

Really, other than this, the only other known working option is to reformat your computer.

Hope this helps.

This Lenovo 3000 J 115 is infected with the well-documented "MS Remove Tool" spy/malware. MS Remove Tool (the real version) and MS Defender will not execute--the same alarm and bubble message...

Use another PC and get a flash drive. Go to http://www.malwarebytes.com and get the free download. Put the .exe file on your flash drive then while disconnected from the network, install and run the malwarebytes program (quick scan) on your pc (if it boots up). If you get that far, then get online and update the malwarebytes program and then run it again with the updates. Good Luck.

Why m pc takes ages to boot

There are several reasons for a system to boot slowly.
1. Hard disk space is full
2. Temporary files have not been deleted
3. Unused Network shares have not been removed.
4. An over abundance of start up programs. Run ms config to see all the programs that start with Windows. Look at the Startup tab. Be careful not to make changes unless you know what you are doing.
5. Spyware.Malware, and other malicious programs

I have GA-8iD533 motherboard. One of my friend tried to flushing the bios, but during the flushing the electricity was gone. After the electricity come i power on the computer, now it shows nothing and i...

To recover your motherboard bios and bring it back to life, you will need this following things:

1. Floppy Drive: It is needed to load the Boot Disk and the new BIOS update.
2. Boot Floppy: It is needed to load the basic operating system, preferably MS DOS.
3. ISA Video Card: Optional, but can simply the recovery process.

Notes:
A startup disk can be automatically built from the Add/Remove Programs applet within the control panel. The boot disk is a vital part of this guide, though users with WinNT/2K will need to build this boot disk from a system running MS-DOS or Win9x/ME.

You can obtain it also from this website: www.Bootdisk.com

Be sure to copy all needed BIOS utilities and update/backup files used during the original flash process to this disk as well.

After making the boot disk, delete the config.sys and autoexec.bat in the boot disk. It can be found in the disk primary directory path.

Create your own autoexec, bat. Using a notepad, build the autoexec.bat file by putting all the command lines in flashing a BIOS.

The approach for using flash utility from AMI or Phoenix is similar, but be sure to read the provided help information about each command line option before building the autoexec.bat entry. Create the text command entry, and then save to the file "autoexec.bat" in drive A: . This will load the command at floppy boot time, regardless of whether an ISA video card is available.

If you are using MS-DOS 6.0 or later, you can use multiple configuration menus or the CHOICE.COM program to configure your system. For more information on using these options under MS-DOS 6.0 or later, type HELP MULTI-CONFIG or HELP CHOICE at the MS-DOS command prompt and then press ENTER. To create the files to automatically restart your computer with the appropriate configuration, do the following:

Create a directory on your hard drive called C:\CONFIGS. Create the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files you need to boot your system for HIMEM.SYS and applications that require it, with the following names: c:\configs\config.dos c:\configs\autoexec.dos Create the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files you need to start your system for the program that conflicts with HIMEM.SYS. Any unique file extension can be used. The following example uses 386: c:\configs\config.386 c:\configs\autoexec.386 The following DEBUG script can be used to create a small executable file called REBOOT.COM. This file, when executed, will cause your system to restart. To create the file, change to the DOS directory, and type the following: debug reboot.comEnter the following information, pressing ENTER key after each line: A 100 ; Debug instruction for assemble MOV AH,0D ; Disk Reset INT 21h ; causes SmartDrv 4.x to write cache MOV AX, 40 ; set up segment addressing MOV DS,AX DS: OR BYTE PTR [17],0C ; equivalent of pressing CTRL+ALT MOV AX,4F53 ; Issue a "DEL" (53h = DEL scan code) INT 15h ; EMM386 sees this & shuts down. DS: MOV WORD PTR [72],1234 ; Set REBOOT flag to Warm-Boot (0=cold) JMP F000:FFF0 ; Execute the internal restart routine <CR> ; This line must be blank (just hit ENTER) R CX 20 ; File size to be written to disk (in hex) N REBOOT.COM ; Filename W ; Write the file to disk Q ; Quit Debug NOTE: The REBOOT.COM file created with this debug script is compatible with SMARTDrive and its write-behind cache feature. The instructions in REBOOT.COM cause SMARTDrive to write (flush) its write-behind cache to disk before the computer is rebooted.

The following commands can be used to copy and rename the configuration files to the root directory of the C drive and restart the computer. To simplify the process, you can put these commands into batch files.

To start your machine for Windows, use the following commands: copy c:\configs\autoexec.dos c:\autoexec.bat copy c:\configs\config.dos c:\config.sys reboot.com To start your machine for the 386 application, use the following commands: copy c:\configs\autoexec.386 c:\autoexec.bat copy c:\configs\config.386 c:\config.sys reboot.com
