How can I fix "Red ring of death" on my XBox 360

Three flashing red lights around the Xbox 360 power button (nicknamed the "Red Ring of Death" or "Red Lights of Death" or "Red Ring of Doom"), instead of the one to four green lights indicating normal operation, represent an internal problem that requires service. Warning signs may include freeze-ups, graphical problems in the middle of gameplay, such as checkerboard or pinstripe patterns on the screen, and sound errors, and the console only responds to pressing the power button to turn it off. These events may happen once or several times until the hardware failure occurs, or not at all. If the console freezes occasionally, the error will not necessarily follow. The technical problems seem to affect some generations of consoles more than others. e.g. Xbox 360 60GB This error code is usually caused by failure of one or more hardware components, although it can indicate that the console is not receiving enough power from the power supply, which can either be due to a faulty power supply or if the power supply cable is not fully inserted into the console. The 3 flashing lights can also be caused by power surges; if the console is connected to an outlet that receives a power surge, it may have a failure and the 3 lights will appear as long as the console is plugged into the outlet. Turning off the console, unplugging all power cables and plugging them back in, and restarting the console will fix the issue in this case. hope this helps

The ac adapter red light stays on and the counsole will not work

This problem occurs when the external power supply has detected a fault. The power supply has several built-in safeguards to help prevent damage to either the console or to the power supply. The power supply will turn off if one of the following conditions is true:

• There is too much current.
• The voltage is too high.
• The temperature of the power supply is too high.

When any of these conditions are true, the light on the power supply turns red. Here are some steps that you can use to try to fix the problem.

Step 1: Make sure that the power supply is cool

The red light might indicate that the power supply is too hot or that it has overheated. Follow these steps if the power supply light is red:

1. Make sure that your Xbox 360 console is turned off.
2. Disconnect your Xbox 360 Power Supply from your Xbox 360 console and from the wall outlet.
3. Let the power supply cool for two hours in a well-ventilated space. Do not connect the Xbox 360 power supply to the console or to the wall outlet during this time.
4. After the power supply has cooled for two hours, reconnect the Xbox 360 Power Supply to the console and to the wall outlet.
If cooling the power supply does not resolve the problem or if the problem persists, use the steps in the next section.

Step 2: Make sure that the power supply is plugged in correctly

Make sure that the power supply is directly plugged into a working wall outlet. You may have problems with the power supply if you use an extension cord or a power strip if the extension cord or the power strip is faulty or cannot supply the required power to the console.

If the power supply is still not working as expected, use the steps in the next section.

Step 3: Plug the power supply into a different wall outlet

To eliminate the possibility that the wall outlet you are using is faulty or that there is a blown fuse, plug the power cord into a different wall outlet in a different area of your place of residence.

If this does not resolve the problem, use the steps in the next section.

Step 4: Try another Xbox 360 Power Cord and Xbox 360 Power Supply

If you have a different Xbox 360 Power Cord and Xbox 360 Power Supply, try to use them to test the console. If the console turns on when you use a different power cord and power supply, you need to replace the faulty power cord and power supply. If the console does not turn on, the issue may be with the console itself.

If this does not resolve the problem, use the steps in the next section.

Step 5: Obtain a replacement Xbox 360 Power Supply

If the steps in this article did not resolve the issue and the Xbox 360 Power Supply light continues illuminate red, you need to obtain a replacement power supply.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

My powerbrick light is red all the time, does it mean i need a new one

it could and maybe not first diagnose the problem with what i oultine below. To see if anything fits into the category of your problem. Then try to hook up the power brick to another outlet in another room. If it does it there you can narrow down the cause of the problem.
THE CAUSE This problem occurs when the power supply detects a problem. The power supply has several built-in safeguards to help prevent damage to either the console or to the power supply. The power supply will turn off if: There is too much current. The voltage is too high. The temperature of the power supply is too high. When any of these things happen, the light on the power turns red. THINGS TO TRY Here are some things you can do to try and fix the problem.
Solution 1: Make sure that the power supply is cool The red light might indicate that the power supply is too hot or that it has overheated. Follow these steps if the power supply light is red: Turn the console off. Disconnect your Xbox 360 Power Supply from your Xbox 360 console and from the wall outlet.

Let the power supply cool for two hours in a well-ventilated space. Do not connect the Xbox 360 power supply to the console or to the wall outlet during this time. After the power supply has cooled for two hours, reconnect the power supply to the console and to the wall outlet, and then turn the console on. If the power supply light is still red, try the next solution. Solution 2: Make sure that the power supply is plugged in Make sure that the power supply is directly plugged into a working wall outlet. Problems might occur with the power supply if it is connected through an extension cord or surge protector.
If the power supply light is still red after you connect the power supply directly to a working all outlet, try the next solution. Solution 3: Plug the power supply into a different wall outlet To check the possibility that the wall outlet you are using is faulty or that there is a blown fuse, plug the power cord into a wall outlet that you know is working.
If this does not solve the problem, try the next solution. Solution 4: Order a replacement Xbox 360 power supply If you've tried all the solutions above and your power supply light is still red, you should contact Xbox Support to order a replacement power supply.
MORE INFORMATION To help the power supply work correctly, follow these guidelines: Do not block any ventilation openings in the power supply. Do not put the power supply on a bed, a sofa, or on any other soft surface that might block ventilation openings. Do not put the power supply in a confined space, such as a bookcase, a rack, or a stereo cabinet, unless the space is well ventilated. Do not put the power supply on a stereo speaker, an amplifier, or a heat source such as a radiator or a heat register. Do not use an unlicensed accessory, such as a third-party power supply or any accessory that plugs in between the Xbox 360 console and the power supply. Plug the power supply directly into a working wall outlet. The power supply might not work correctly if it is connected to an extension cord or surge protector
if you need an explanation or further assistance please let me know. I will be glad to help, Thanks -Midwest-tek

Xbox 360 is turning on for less than a second

Got kind of bad news , It is the power supply ,but it's the power supply
in side the box itself. It's more than likely a shorted regulator specifically
one of the 12 volt liner reg chips , I had to swap a few out to resolve
this a few times.

Xbox 360 three red lights

Hi. Here are some check points that may restore the normal functions of this unit. If the below check points do not produce results, Click Here to be directed to a step by step repair procedure that you can use to correct the fault.

THINGS TO TRY

1. Try restarting the console.
2. If restarting the console does not resolve the behavior, follow these steps:
* Turn the console off.
* Unplug all the power and AV cables from the console.
* Unplug the power cord from the wall socket.
* Firmly reconnect all the cables.
* Turn on the console.
3. If these steps do not resolve the behavior, turn the console off, remove the hard drive, and then turn on the console. If the 3x Red LED error light is no longer displayed, turn the console off, re-attach the hard drive, and then turn on the console.
4. Also examine the lights on the power supply. When you turn on the console, the power supply light should illuminate green even if the three lights on the RoL flash red.

FLASHING RED LIGHT ON 360

Make sure that the power supply is cool loadTOCNode(2, 'whattotry'); The red light may indicate that the power supply is too hot or it has already overheated. If that is the case, you should let the power supply cool for several hours in a well-ventilated space. Turn off the Xbox 360 console and don't turn it back on while the power supply is cooling. This will allow the power supply sufficient time to cool. As soon as the power supply has cooled off, the power supply light will change from red to orange, and you can turn the console back on.

If the power supply light is still red after you have let the power supply unit cool in a well-ventilated space, the power supply unit may require replacement. You can contact Xbox Customer Support at http://www.xbox.com/support/contact (http://www.xbox.com/support/contact) for information about how to replace the power supply.
