The following worked perfectly in restoring the CD-ROM drive:

The following steps were posted by skidzy on the pcadvisor.co.uk forum:

Follow these directions for clearing the Upper/Lower Filters: (might want to print this out)

1. Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key ( if Vista Start search or windows+R )
2. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or
3. clicking the "+" next to it.)
4. Expand the "SYSTEM" Key
5. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
6. Expand the "Control" Key
7. Expand the "Class" Key
8. Please look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:
{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
9. High light this key by left clicking once on it
10. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these please delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
11. Please exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen

Reboot your computer.

If in any doubt editing the registry, please create a System Restore point first and also backup your registry.

How to use System Recovery console (steps)

Starting a Recovery

Turn on the computer and immediately begin pressing the F10 key repeatedly until a Recovery Screen appears.
You can also start a recovery from recovery discs, or from Windows. For more information refer to Performing a Full System Recovery in Windows XP .

Recovery is taking too long
If your computer stops responding after using the recovery program, do the following:

NOTE:If the computer appears to have stopped responding after restarting from a recovery, please wait, it may take several hours or longer to complete the initial Windows XP setup process, especially if a recovery was run from a recovery disc set sent by HP. A Standard recovery may also take longer, depending on how many files are stored in user accounts (like in My Documents ).

1 Exit the stalled recovery process by pressing the POWER button on the PC until the power turns off, this takes approximately five seconds.
2 Before recovering, disconnect personal media drives, printers, scanners, cameras, camera-type memory cards, and other devices that did not originally come with the PC.
3 If you are using recovery discs, be aware of the following items:
4 If you created the recovery discs using Recovery CD Creator, be sure to run the recovery from the same drive that you used to create the discs.
5 Clean the discs with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth wetted with distilled water. Wipe from the center of the disc to the outside edge. You may also use disc cleaning kits or disc restoration kits from your local computer store. These kits produce better results than using cloth and water.
6 You may also use available CD/DVD Drive cleaning kits to clean the laser reading lens of the CD or DVD drive.
Try running a full system recovery again from the hard drive by turning the on the computer and pressing the F10 key until a Recovery Screen appears. This performs the recovery from the hard drive.
7 If the recovery stops when recovering from the hard drive, use the section Disc errors occur during the recovery process to eliminate errors on the drive. Try recovering again after the disk errors are removed.

I am having problems inserting a dvd into my acer laptop tower.I was opened up the side where it says dvd but it doesn't seem to fit in!

A) What is a laptop tower?

B) What is the model number of the Desktop PC?

This can be found on the back, near the Windows product key; or up on the side of the computer tower.

Is it an Acer?
Just pulling your leg about the laptop tower thing. I can see you meant Desktop, and not Laptop.
Just want to make sure you're not referring to an Acer laptop, while posting about a desktop computer made by somebody else.

Post back in a Comment.

I will try to find the User Manual for you, and take a look at this little beastie myself.

joecoolvette

My Acer Aspire 5002WLMi Laptop is not reading any disks put into its CD drive. The Disk icon is not even appearing.

First question: What are the circumstances that led to this issue? Has the Acer Aspire ever read any disks in its cd drive? What happened before this occurred? What are the sounds/beeps you hear when the cd is inserted into the disk drive?

If you can go into the device manager (click on My Computer--Properties----Device Manager---go to the cd/dvdrom drive. What do you see? ex. if there is a red x, that mea your laptop is not recognizing the device...) Let me know when you have examined all the questions above, so I can help you solve this issue.
