Question about LaCie External USB 2.0 500GB 7200 RPM 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Computer doesn't recognize my Lacie HD

I've had my 750GB d2 Quadra for about 4-5 months now that I use with my macbook. It's worked fine with no problems until about five days ago when my computer just stopped recognizing the HD. I would say that two or three days before the power adapter started making more noise, but it still worked fine.
Now when I plug in the HD it sounds like it has trouble getting started as if the hardware inside just isn't moving the way it should, but when I stand it upright it starts to spin after about a minute. My computer, however, still does not recognize the HD.
I've gone into DiskUtilities and the computer sees that the HD is connected, but I can't repair it. I have the option to erase, but obviously don't want to do that because I'll certainly loose 50GB of files.
Any tips here?
I've gone into

I should also mention that, when I move the HD it sounds as though something has come loose inside of the casing.

i have a LaCie 500 USB 2.0 external drive. For months I left it on with no problems. One day I decided to turn it off, and the next day when I turned everything back on, the computer would not recognize the drive. I have no idea what happened.

From your description it sounds like you power adapter did indeed fail at first, but if the HDD spins now the adapter seems to be working fine at the moment. If the hdd is in device manager, than at least you can use carving tools like photorec to pull your files out, even if the filesystem is corrupt. If you want somebody else to do it for you you can check Data Recovery NYC. Otherwise http://hddguru.com/ is a great source for tools and knowledge on how to do it yoruself.

type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter.

LaCie d2 Quadra is inert: service/repair or buy new one?

Check with LaCie's support site at http://www.lacie.com/us/support/ and it's a good idea that you write down the serial number of your external disk.

am not so sure if this is a similar issue with iomega2_bing.gif external drive in which the drive wont show up on My Computer but when the external drive was plugged into an ubuntu machine the drive was being detected and working just fine.

Please try to do the same. plug your external drive to an ubuntu machine and lets see if it can be detected. If it is then the hard disk has a similar issue with iomega drives. check this link for the solution.

How to format the LaCie 500GB d2 Quadra for Windows XP??

This way it should work...
Connect your drive to the computer...
Go to: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer management.
A new window will appear...
Select Storage > Disk management on the left of the window.
Now you will see the different drives that are connected or part of your system.
One of the drives listed there is your LaCie, i think you'll recognize it by name...
Right-click on it, and select 'format'
In the new window, select the new volume label (as you like it), the file system (use NTFS), and set allocation unit size to default.
Make sure 'Perform a quick format' is not checked...

Then click OK. Your drive will be formatted now... Don't interrupt the process
