Playstation 2 disk read error starting with no warning

if the disk is a Blueback, most modern PS2 consoles won't touch it. bluebacked disks still have their data stored in CD format rather than in a Data DVD

to play a Blueback
1. turn on the unit without a disk in
2. press Triangle on "browser"
3. scroll up to the top item and press triangle again
4. turn "Diagnostic Mode" ON
5. back out with circle, and start the browser
6. put your disk in with the browser on. is should read the disk

some disks will still cause the red screen (like cheat devices) occasionally

This is a result of one of two things-

1) Your disc is dirty, damaged, or scratched. To fix this just clean it gently with a wet cloth, if it still doesnt work you can take it to a game store to have it cleaned there. It is possible that it is scratched to much and is unable to read at all.

2) Your Playstation 2's reading laser has become damaged or dirty. I suggest blowing air through the system with your mouth or preferably a can of compressed air which can be purchase at most retail stores.

This error seems most likely to be a disc issue.

* If the game disc does not work in another system, this is a good indicator that the disc is damaged or defective. To acquire a replacement game disc, you will want to refer to your manual for warranty information specific to your product.

Some Playstation systems, especially the older models, have trouble reading some newly manufactured Playstation 2 game disks. Sony recommends using their Auto Diagnosis tool (http://www.us.playstation.com/support/ps2/hardwaresystem/default.html) to resolve this issue.

There is a piece dust on the CD reader eye. there is two ways to fix this. 1. bye a disk cleaner any wal-mart or 2. take the unit apart. and clean the tiny glass laser eye your self using a cotton swab and alcohol. WARNING! never take any thing apart while it is plugged in. O TRY PLAYING A DVD IN IT AND SEE IF IT WORKS OR NOT IF NOT THEN YOU KNOW ITS DUST ON THE LASER LENS.

Try running a cd cleaner disk in you playstation.

Hello, first step should be to clean the optical pick up unit. There is a special CD for cleaning of the optical unit (wet method). If this does not provide a solution please come back and advice. Best regards, Arpi
