Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

My Dell computer is relatively new, less than a year old. But whenever i play and kind of sound from my speakers, it kind of skips, making it sound like a scratched cd. It happens for any sound, even when the computer is being turned on, watching videos online, and when listening to music on ituenes.

CD/DVD player is skipping

not much you can do... the lens is probably scratched and, at this point, it would probably cost less to just replace the DVD writer. And it doesn't even have to be the same make and model you have in your Dell. It can be any dvd writer that has the same connection type as yours.

Old Altec Lansing (no model number on them but they're at least 10 years old) speakers won't work on new Dell Optiplex desktop. They still work on the old Dell Dimension they were on and work on a Del

I have a similar set of Boston Acoustics speakers, which work fine for my tower.
I find it hard to believe that they would just fail outright, and also that (unless you bought an upgraded sound system) you would have digital-only for your audio.
I would recommend to check the basics first.
  1. Check the speakers on another device. Mp3 player will work fine.
  2. check the sound card on your computer (use a set of headphones or another speaker set).
  3. If you find they weren't plugged in, powered on, etc. resolve that. Usually the power plugs are black, and only fit in one spot. The audio cable to plug into the computer is similar to a headphones jack (3.5mm). On most computers the audio output (speakers) port is colored green.
  4. If none of these get you fixed, go into the control panel and click the sounds icon. From there you can view your volume levels (is the sound muted?), view your playback device (it might have a hardware problem, or be disabled), and test the settings.
  5. If you are still stuck after this please also post your version of windows, and the make/model of your computer. If you know it, the type of audio device you are using would also be helpful. (if it's a Dell standard device or perhaps an upgraded Creative or other brand device + model #)
Thanks for asking, and Good Luck!

I have a DELL Dimension 5100. It is about 4 years old. All at once the speakers quit operating, no sound at all. Where do I look for the problem? THANKS.... C. N. Edwards, Jonesborough, TN....

Pleas check the following

1. check connecting a headphone to the computer and see if you get sound from the computer
2. check connecting your speakers to another sound source like a ipod / MP3 player etc
3. try playing different audio / video to confirm
4. check speaker / sound icon in the bottom right corner of your screen - click on it, see if mute is checked or volume level is lowered.
5. if the above steps do not work you have to right click on the my computer icon, click on manage and click on device manager on the left side, if you see any thing that tells you other devices with audio devices under it or any sound related device with a exclamation mark then you have to downlod the latest driver from support.dell.com

Dell computer, less than a year old, XP Pro, having problems freezing, especially when using applications like some browser-based games (my wife plays Happy Island and that stuff on Facebook), and also...

If your computer is less than a year old, you should be able to contact Dell technical support for help (support.dell.com)

It sounds like it's a driver issue - most likely video drivers. You can check the support website for updated drivers for your video card.

What's a good replacement for Dell Dimension 4700 speakers (AS500PA) that crackle too much to turn on?

The best replacement would be a Mac. They are easy to use, take up less space than that big tower, have a beautiful screen, and only one cable, (if you use a wireless mouse and keyboard). Not to mention, with the new operating system, Snow Leopard, you can run Windows with the help of Boot Camp!

And how much are those old Windows headaches worth to you? Believe me, I had PCs for over 20 years, and just converted to the Mac. It's like night and day. No more Windows headaches, my computer is actually fun again!

Have windows 7 on my new acer aspire 5517; trying to get external speakers (2 different kinds) to work. my generic usb speakers install and it shows they're working properly, but errors when trying to play...

what happens when you plug the speakers in the green port? You might want to try the other audio ports because on a few new computers i have seen the speakers have to be plugged in a different hole. also make sure the speakers are plugged up to the electric plug.

My speakers sound like the sound is playing underwater

It's probably just a playback setting but, take it back anyway. Let them see if they can make it right. If not, the repair's at their cost.

I had the same problem: speakers worked, but clicked whenever they were on. They are actually Compaq speakers connected to a Dell computer. I solved the problem by moving the speakers about 12 inches farther away from my wireless router. Very easy!
