Question about Kenmore 44042 Front Load Washer

4 Answers

Kenmore 417.440822400 I have a kenmore front loader washer (model # 417.44082400) less than 3 1/2 years old with problems. The last load of clothes were dripping wet as though it did not complete/start spin cycle. There was no visible water in the drum. I'm not sure it even went thru the wash cycle. We started machine and closed laundry room door. Upon finding wet clothes, I removed front cover, found tech data sheet. I followed instructions for diagnostic test, but could not get machine to enter test. I did press the start and pause at same time to recall last error code. It indicated a E57 code which referred to high current on inverter and called for test 11. Motor and tub spin easy with belt off. Ohm test on pins 1, 2, 3 for motor plug were between 4 and 6 ohms. (motor ok??) Test indicated the speed control board is bad.?? Tonight I started a cycle and watch it to see what was going on... I heard the door lock, humming sound and the cold water start filling tub. After about 5-10 seconds the water stops running in tub. After a minute or so, the water will start again and run for another 5-10 seconds. Tub does not fill completely, turn or spin. I finally turned dial to drain and spin. The drain pump started and pumped water out...at least below the tub. All this background to ask for help. What's keeping me to getting into diagnostic test mode, do I have more than one problem..... speed control board and water fill issue? Any help is appreciated....the dirty clothes are building up. The drain pumps seems to operate ok.

How do you check water level valve and switch?

Machine will run thru timer on display, tub will not start tumbling/washing.

Should I ignore the lsst error code recall (E57)?

What could be keeping it from going into diagnostic mode?

    Thanks.. Ed

Is there a way to check speed control board to determine if it is faulty before ordering one?

just to make sure...the main control board and the motor speed board (located next to the motor) are the same? thanks

If your washer won't spin, check these:

It doesn't pump or spin If it doesn't pump water out or spin, check to see if the motor is running, then proceed as follows:

  • If the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or a broken pump belt. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it. If the pump belt is broken or looks quite worn, replace it--but be sure to check the pump pulley before you change the belt.

  • If the motor isn't running, the lid switch may be defective. If so, the washing machine can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

It pumps, but doesn't spin If your washer pumps out the water but doesn't spin, check these:

  • The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

  • The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.

  • A belt may be broken. Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)

  • The clutch may be worn. If your washer is a GE, it may use a clutch to come up to the proper spin speed. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the unit from spinning well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician.

  • The drive motor may be defective. Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.

  • The transmission may not be shifting properly. Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. This is a complex system, if your washer has a shifter problem, you may want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.

  • The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. Call a qualified appliance repair technician.

It spins only with the lid closed For safety, washing machines are made so that they spin only with the lid closed. The lid switch prevents the spinning action when the lid is up.

If the error code is a 57, that could be a problem with the motor
control board or motor itself. E57 means a high current on the
inverter. Here is what you have to check. Remove the belt from the
motor and spin the motor pulley. If it does not spin, the motor is the
problem. Spin the tub pulley, does it spin free? If not it may be the
tub bearings. Remove the harness from the motor and measure the
resistance between pins 1&2 1&3 and 2&3. All the readings
should be between 4 to 6 ohms.If the readings are good, replace the
speed control board. If the readings are incorrect replace the motor.
Parts can get expensive so the tests must be made. This is for an e57
    code.

Its eighter the timer or the control unit thats damaged. Normally this involves replacing eighter of them, In you case i'm betting on the control unit (MAIN CIRCUIT BOARD THAT CONTROLS EVERYTHING) is at fault. Some people can fix the board it self while i'd suggest you just have it replaced. But then again it starts ti fill ,, stops fill again stops, It also suggest the timer. But the error codes suggest the Main Control Board. Change the main control board.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, error code "E57" as you posted indicates inverter error, high current. An inverter in a washing machine (in simpler terms) is a small electronic circuitry/board responsible for drive control of the motor. This is dictates/control the speed of the motor in accordance with the programmed run/cycle. If it is using above normal current, it would indicate a faulty component and therefore would require replacement.

Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

    Hi again,

    Appreciate the comment/postback.

There is no simple continuity check on the motor control board (speed control board). Actually, it is the motor that is consuming the supposedly high current. the motor control board aside from controlling the motor's speed also sense how much current the motor is using. If the motor checks at 4 & 6 ohms and is not overheating then for the moment we can assume that it is not in reality using too high current. With this in mind, we can further assume tha the sensor is faulty. The sensor is built-in to the motor control board.

You have cycling problems.

Check first if the water is draining properly, if not check the drain lines, and have the drain pump checked.

If the machine stops when filling also test the water inlet valve and the water level switch.

If the machine stops in the middle of a cycle, check that the water is heating, if it is not, test element, and thermostat.

If none of the above is the cause for your problem, and this is not a wiring problem, then you usually have a faulty timer, in that case replace timer control assembly.

During spin cylces very load noises----bearings gone less than three old got estimate of 4-500 to fix does that sound right?

Yes, that is a good price for a main bearing repair. I wouldn't recommend it. I would buy either a whirlpool top load washer with and agitator ( we are doing to many repairs on the wp washers without agitators), or I would buy the super capacity front load duet. You will save more money in the long run with the front loader. Both of these have been the best washers built in the last 30 years. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

I have a Kenmore top load washer model 20692. The washer won't drain and whenever the washer is supposed to turn all I hear is a hum. What could be the problem and is it worth fixing in a 10 year old...

Hi,
Sounds like you have multiple problems...you are right... probably not worth fixing...
Look at the front loaders... they use way less water and are more gentile on your clothing...

My kenmore front load did that just a few months after I bought it. Unfortunately it was the the electronic board {brains of cycles} that had to be replaced. Had to replace it 3 times!! Warranty did cover it. Look into your warranty--at that time the boards were $200-$250 each!!
