Had to do with our new Sony DVD player, soft wear needed to be updated, it took a trip to the dealer, was too unclear in their instruction book.

When playing our Sony DVD player(had it for years and problem just started) when the main attraction comes on a large black square consumes most of the screen!! It does not do this on the previews just the main flick. It is doing this on movies we own plus movies from Net flix. Net flix was clueless about the problem!

    HELP.

Hitachi Ultrascan HD Black square question?

If that black box is generated by Tv, it should be there all the time, like on cable, av input etc.
as you said its not always, so cable top box is suspected which can generate such box as well.
I would suggest when you see that box in tv reception, simply play dvd player and check is that box still appears on dvd input? I hope black box wont appear in playback of dvd player.
Need further help, please let me know.

Black square on one channel

that's a picture inside a picture option, and it sounds like the inside picture is set for a blank channel...just go to the menu, and shut off the picture in a picture option..should do the trick..

and keep the kids away from the machine

Black out screen

I had the same problem once with my RCA television. It only happened on certain channels and didn't happen during commercial breaks. If I adjusted the volume on the tv the box went away, but came back shortly after. The problem ended up being some malfunction in the closed captioning. I turned it all off and changed the CC settings and never had the problem again.

Small black squares appear on Vizio 37

Sounds like a digital cable issue to me. Try connecting the cable directly to the TV bypassing the cable box and I bet that the issue will be gone. If so then contact your cable provider as the box or the incomming signal may be at falt.
