Question about Kenmore 44042 Front Load Washer

Open Question

Kenmore 417.440822400 Hi, my first post. I have a kenmore front loader washer (model # 417.44082400) less than 3 1/2 years old with problems. The last load of clothes were dripping wet as though it did not complete/start spin cycle. There was no visible water in the drum. I'm not sure it even went thru the wash cycle. We started machine and closed laundry room door. Upon finding wet clothes, I removed front cover, found tech data sheet. I followed instructions for diagnostic test, but could not get machine to enter test. I did press the start and pause at same time to recall last error code. It indicated a E57 code which referred to high current on inverter and called for test 11. Motor and tub spin easy with belt off. Ohm test on pins 1, 2, 3 for motor plug were between 4 and 6 ohms. (motor ok??) Test indicated the speed control board is bad.?? Tonight I started a cycle and watch it to see what was going on... I heard the door lock, humming sound and the cold water start filling tub. After about 5-10 seconds the water stops running in tub. After a minute or so, the water will start again and run for another 5-10 seconds. Tub does not fill completely, turn or spin. I finally turned dial to drain and spin. The drain pump started and pumped water out...at least below the tub. All this background to ask for help. What's keeping me to getting into diagnostic test mode, do I have more than one problem..... speed control board and water fill issue? Any help is appreciated....the dirty clothes are building up. Ed

I have a Whirlpool Duet front loader Washer approximately 6 years old. The control lock is on and I can't start the washer. How do I resolve this problem.

This advise is for Kenmore Elite and Whirlpool Duet front loader washers and dryers with a Control Lock problem.

This may or may not be an indication of a serious problem. In the majority of the cases, this is a simple operator error. Nearly all these model appliances have some sort of Control Lock feature on the front panel now. This is a designed safety feature that is used to prevent small children from manipulating the controls. The controls can be easily locked or unlocked by pressing and holding the following button on the front panel:

Whirlpool Duet Washer - Press and hold the END OF CYCLE SIGNAL button for 3 seconds.

Whirlpool Duet Dryer - Press and hold the END OF CYCLE SIGNAL button for 3 seconds.

Kenmore Elite Washer - Press and hold the DRAIN/SPIN button for 3 seconds.

Kenmore Elite Dryer - Press and hold the AUTO DRY LEVEL button for 3 seconds.

These instructions may not be all inclusive for all Kenmore and Whirlpool models, but they are the most common. Chances are, if you have a Control Lock feature, the instructions will be printed on the front panel adjacent to the button that is required to lock or unlock the controls.

NOTE: These instructions may also work for newer model Maytag, Hotpoint, Admiral and Frigidaire model front loaders as well. Refer to your owner's manual or front panel for instructions pertaining to your specific model.

If the Control Lock feature will not lock or unlock the appliance, unplugging the unit for AT LEAST 30 minutes is recommended in order to reset the main control board. In many cases this is all that is required to correct momentary glitches.

I have a Kenmore top load washer model 20692. The washer won't drain and whenever the washer is supposed to turn all I hear is a hum. What could be the problem and is it worth fixing in a 10 year old...

Hi,
Sounds like you have multiple problems...you are right... probably not worth fixing...
Look at the front loaders... they use way less water and are more gentile on your clothing...

Kenmore 3.5 frnt loader always has inches of H20 in rubber gasket

does your model start with 417? if so then there is a new door gasket that will help with water left in the boot.
if you have 110, then there is no new gasket/ boot...
you need to clean the drain pump sump screen.
either unit will have a clean out screen that is a removable cover on the front of the pump and it allows you to unscrew the sump filter and clean it out.

Previous post on a Kenmore washer

How old is the washer ?

Here is an interesting report I just read!!!!!!!!!!

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old washer

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your washer,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your washer is under warranty or less than four years old ,
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that washers under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your washer is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new washer.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive washer
eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of washers you replace are likely to end up in a landfill.

Trying to figure out Cu. ft. capacity

hi wanda, most top load whirlpool units, they make the sears kenmore models, are around 3.0 cubic feet.
its not that important for a top loader, but when going to a front loader thats how they rate them.
what i would recommend is you buy a unit that will do the laundry that you will need to do for the next 15 years.
what i mean is if you have 2 or more young children, that you will be doing laundry for the next 15 years, then a full size front loader would do you good. size 3.5 c/f or larger, like a whirlpool he4 or he5.
if it is just for 2 people then a smaller unit would be better, like a whirlpool duet or sport model.
the reason for the choice is a front loader needs to be filled up for it to work properly. doing smaller loads in a front loader will cause them to shake and not work as well.
now be ready as the new washers will cost about 1,000 bucks.
another suggestion for 2 people would be the whirlpool cabrio top loader. i like them alot and they have very few parts to fail and have a good reliability.
good luck and happy shopping.
p.s. remember sears will match prices and give you 10% off the best price!!
