Question about Philips Magnavox 51MP392H Rear Projection Television
Ok guys, im new here!
I apoligize if I am too specific here, but I like to make sure everyone has all the information needed to diagnose my problem.
Ok, boys- first things first - I am perfectly comfortable soldering (I have assembled circuit boards for the last 10 years) , and I know some basics of testing with a multimeter, basics of TV's, and have played with them in the past - even repaired a few simple ones in the past! Not bad for a girl, huh?
I have a Magnavox 51MP392H/17. It worked fine until one night where the picture just shut off! The sound kept going fine, just no picture! I downloaded the service manual and started on this adventure:
I pulled the back of the set to have a look at it. I have looked at all of the capacitors, none seem swollen, There are no visibly burned components or circuit traces, and I made sure to check all of the fuses on the boards - even the weird little black round ones... all tested good.
I removed all the convergence resistors and checked them with my meter- they all ohm out fine! Just on a gamble, I ordered some Sanyo brand STK392-120's and installed them....still no change!
When I turn the set ON i hear the power relay click, then the high pitched sound (blip) of the flyback transformer - then I get audio from the signal but no picture. I have also noticed that the base of all 3 CRT's glows red when on. Does this mean the FBT is good?
Sometimes when I try to turn it on, it will click on, you will hear the FBT, then the whole set will turn off for one second, and then back on, and you will hear the FBT again, but no picture still.
I have felt the heatsink on the Horizontal Output Transistor and it is warm, as is the heatsink for the convergence I.C's - I am guessing the FBT or HOT is bad, but I dont know how to test either one of them.
Any advice for an amature do-it-yourselfer ? I miss my tv, and I still think it looks better than an LCD! I know not alot of women do this sort of thing, but I like to think I am a bit different, hehe. Dont be afraid to talk techie with me.. I know a little, but I am also sure you all could probably confuse me if you wanted to, so keep that in mind!
If heat sinks on hori/and convergence are running warm then it means sweep is working ,You have a bad Flyback transfomer HVG part number 3122 268 32942 Phillips FBT
