Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

New microwave; loud fan when heating items

Hi there! We just bought a GE microwave, #JVM1540, above the cooktop model, to replace an older GE Spacemaker. It works fine, except that it runs very loud -- it's difficult to have a conversation in the kitchen when heating something! Specifically, when I put, say, my cup of coffee in to heat, once I press Start, the sound of the vent fan kicks on -- just like it would if I were using the fan to vent the stovetop while cooking. I checked the manual, and while cooking, turned the vent fan "off" as indicated, and while this might have helped very slightly, it's still obnoxiously loud. Our old model had a light blowing sound, like every other microwave I've ever heard, but this is quite different; it's just like running the vent fans (which I rarely run because they're loud!)... Is there a problem with the blower? Is this normal for this model? If so, I'm taking it back! The noise will make me crazy! Thanks!

    MY NEW GE SPACEMAKER MICROWAVE JVM1540 - THE VENT WAS STILL GOING AFTER THE BAKED POTATO WAS DONE. I HAD THE OVEN ON, SO MAYBE THE HEAT FROM THE OVEN KEPT THE VENT GOING ON THE MICRO TO COOL IT OFF. I HAD TO SEVERAL TIMES PRESS VENT ON AND OFF, 3 TIMES, AND FINALLY THE VENT /FAN VENT OFF.

    I will cook sokething for 15 seconds and the vent fan will kick in and stay on for over an hour. Very loud and obnoxious. Sometimes the microwave does not even heat up. GE said "that is just how the model is". It has been less than 10 months seince I bought the microwave and GE will not exchange the microwave. What are my options?

    We just build a new house and this microwave was installed. I hate it. Like everyone says, the vent fan is VERY loud. If I cook something on the stove and it kicks the fan on automatically, there is no way to turn it off. It is Thanksgiving Day and I am on the internet trying to figure out a way to turn it off. It has been running for 3 hours and I am about to pull my hair out. I have not had anything on the stove cooking for the past hour yet it continues to run.

Since you say it's new, it should be under warranty. I would call GE (see your owner's manual) to get a local authorized service center. Then while you're on the phone with the service center, you can start it up and hold the phone close to it to demonstrate to the technician how loud it is. They should be able to tell you if it will be covered under warranty so you get it fixed free.

Update: I took it back. After speaking to GE, they said that's just how it is, there is no way to silence or quiet it. I took it back and bought an LG. I love it!

This is "normal"- AND the fan cannot be turned off during microwave use- I agree- it is way TOO loud. I'm taking mine back.

Vent fan does not turn on at all


If your cooktop lights recently blew, or if the relay that controls the vent fan is affected, you may need circuit board repair.

Otherwise, it may be a bad fan motor.

There should be a technical sheet hidden behind the grille or behinds the controls. It's very handy to locate and test components.

The GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven model JVM1540 makes a loud fan noise whenyou turn it on. Sounds like the exhast fan but it not?


It sounds like from the description when it is running the noise comes from the magnetron, some microwaves are louder than others, but this could be an early sign the magnetron is going.

My GE JVM1540 microwave appears to run but it won't heat. The lights and turntable work but it does not heat at all.


you will have to replace the microwave, sounds like a burned out magnetron, replacing the magnetron is almost as expencive as a new oven...

We have a GE JVM1540 space saver microwave. It is less than a year old. Will not heat and immediately starts smelling like burning plastic. Any ideas as to what is causing that?

The microwave no longer heats food and it smells as if something is burning. Everything else on the microwave works. Is this a common problem and how can I fix it?


Its your Magnatron tube, thats what makes the microwaves and heats the food. The part will cost you more than a new micro. The new model that replaced yours is a JVM1540 and you can get them for 179.00

My jvm 1540 will not heat. any advice?

Thanks for using FixYa. Microwave not heating properly is caused by a power relay going bad, cold solder joint on the board and/or magnetron (this is only if it makes a loud hum/buzz sound). Also the door hooks and the door-release button should be checked. Please do rate the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

How do you install the charcol Filter?


Take out the two screws on the top as directed, then slide the grill to the left about 1/2". Then pull it toward you.
