I have the same problem. Very frustrading and my solution was to toss it in the trash. Unfortunately these units don't last past 2-3 years.

SOURCE: DVD Player stops reading disc Error message :

usually this happens when lens cannot read the the disc. Due to few reason 1 Your disk is scratched 2 Your DVD lens is covered with dust 3 You need to replace DVD lens
Try another few CD/DVD to rectify whether there is any problem with dvd you are trying to play
if this error occurs on all the dvd you played then the most likely proble is with your DVD lens either its coverd with dust use Disk cleaner if not you got to replace a new DVD lense as per model

Insert DVD, closes, but opens immediately and the screen just says hello. The unit will not shut off unless I unplug it.

If I remember correctly, this unit has a little rubber belt that drives the DVD tray. When it ages, the rubber hardens and loses traction. Thus, the tray does not close properly, the internal sensor recieves no 'closed' message within a specific time, and the tray opens.

Dvd not recording

are you using the same brand of DVDs you recorded last year (and the brands that the manual suggest)...and if you are using dvd-rw on the pc and dvd recorder you will also get this message..(just format and record)...
I also find that Imation DVD works (its not listed in my manual) but when Im not using Maxell or Panasonic it works like a charm on both PC / DVD recorder

Want to unlock Philips DVD player (DVP320)

Did you follow these instructions exactly? If you pressed 9990, as you mentioned, it will not work. You need to press 99990. Do you see region "0" on the display?

start the player without any DVD in it.
open the lid.
while the lid is open press 9,9,9,9,0
you should see region 0 displayed.
close the lid.

Your DVD player is now region free.

note:
replace 0 with 1 to 6 at to set the wanted region number if needed.

Unit only displays "hello"

This is a faulty condition caused by lack of error control in the firmware. Try this:

Unplug machine from wall for 5 min. Hold "open/close" button in and then plug machine into mains whilst continuing to hold the open/close button. Keep holding open/close button for about a minute, as these machines are notoriouly slow to "boot". It that doesn't work, repeat the procedure, but hold down the power button instead of the open/close button in an attempt to reset the memory settings of the unit. Good luck.

Machine stuck on hello...pressed power & stop to no avail

Hi. The most common culprit for this HELLO message issue is a faulty DVD-RW drive. To make sure that this is the case, you will need to replace the DVD-RW drive with another DVD, DVD-RW, or another spare hard drive in it's place to make sure the unit powers on and gets past the Hello message. Just make sure the replacement is configured correctly via the master/slave jumper on the back. If this does nothing to help, then the fault could reside in the motherboard or hard drive.
