Question about Water Heaters
For some reason the shower was cold and I went down to the water heater to see if the pilot was still lit.
It appears it is not and the water heater is quiet.
I tried to reset and follow the lighting instructions, but still no luck.
Is there a way to try a match as the button ignitormay not be working?
I have a whirlpool water heater; pilot and burner are off, i am able to turn the pilot on and will stay on as long as the heater is cold and the burner is off; when i turn on the burner, the heater will run for about 15 min and then pilot and burner will go off, after that happens the pilot will light up but will not stay on, then i have to wait until pilot and burner are off again to repeat the process.

Sounds like the gas valve has failed. The gas valve can be replaced. It will unscrew out of the tank. Shut the water supply to the tank off and get the new gas ready to screw in. Take out the old and screw in the new, you will onlt lose about a cup or two of water if you are quick enough. Otherwise drain the tank down if you must. If you are going to replace the gas valve I would also replace the thermocoupler.
