Connecting a Cobra 29 LTD Classic to a Pyramid PS3KX Power Supply

Hi. I'm new to the whole CB radio thing and am trying to connect a Cobra 29 LTD Classic to a Pyramid PS-3KX 13.8 volt VDC power supply. I know for a fact that the voltage needed to operate the radio is correct, however i'm obviously missing a few key components.

What do i need to connect the positive and negative wires from the 29 LTD radio to the Pyramid PS-3KX power supply properly properly, transeivers perhaps?? I truly don't know, please let me know...thank you.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, the basic requirements for the operation of a CB base station are:

  • CB radio, which you already have;
  • power supply, the Pyramid PS-3KX 13.8 volt VDC power supply;
  • coaxial cable terminated both ends with PL-259 connectors;
  • a base antenna preferably omni;
  • mast and stay wires.
The antenna could be a quarter wave (for starters) or a 5/8. The cable preferably be RG8/U. And you may want to check how well regulated your power supply is. Otherwise, there might be humming sound especially on transmit. And perhaps you could try learning the 10 codes.

73s. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa. Happy Holidays.

    Oh and the wires simply wrap around the power supply terminals; red wire to red terminal, black wire to black terminal.

    Cheers.

You can simply put a "Y" cable for positive and negative terminals. No need for transceivers.

When it's dry, I can't transmit, but when my antennas get wet,transmission doubles, WHY????

Hi John:
Try checking where the antenna is connected to the cable.
It may be corroded and you're not getting continuity unless it is wet.

The calibrate needle wont move to the right to set whe trying to calibrate on cobra 29 ltd classic new radio

You have to press the transmit button to get the radio to send a signal that you can calibrate the SWR meter to. If you are pressing the transmit button and nothing is happening then it could be a blown final transistor, a bad switch, bad microphone connection etc.

Not if the power output from radio to amp is set correct and the jumper for coax is correct length and there is absolute perfect match between them and the antenna used. Afterthought: also the amp better be connected to something big enough to power it.

I disconnected and reconnected the cobra 29 nw ltd classic and now my voice is heard very low and slow it was working fine just before disconnection. can you help

How did you disconnect it?? Antenna wire?? Power supply?? Microphone?? May be that you have a short in your coax in back of radio. Try taking it loose and screw it back in. Try new coax. Turn up Mic gain knob or change microphone. Make sure power wires are connected RED to RED(+) and Black to Black(-). Try grounding radio to metal ; if inside house ground to metal water pipes, filing cabinet, breaker box or meter box or 8 foot rod into earth. Measure SWR it should read 1.1 to 1.5. Measure power supply with Voltmeter it should be 12 to 15 volts. Check antenna plug in back of radio is my guess or microphone itself.

Have Cobra 29 LTD Classic, no sound when hooked to antenna, no light or meter movement on the RF/SWR meter, DOES have power to radio and channel display, any tips to repair, or check for problem areas?

check the squelch by turning all the way both ways. check the external speaker socket. if it is the swicthing type it could be either bad conntact or dry joints. try an external speaker to see if that works. another thing is I believe it wont work if the microphone is not pluged in or connection fault there. Good luck.

Connecting a Cobra 29LTD to a Pyramid PS-3KX 13.8VDC Power Supply

The wires should just attach to the red and black terminals on the radio, strip some wire unscrew the terminals a little wrap behind, and tighten again. Good luck! Or buy some banana plugs and they will plug right in the front

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me" again.

The initial posting would still hold true, best would be:
  • remove TR18;
  • replace 2SC2069 with 2SC1969; and
  • adjust L12, 13 & 14.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
