Question about Teledyne Laars Laars Lite 2 Pool Heater 125,000 Btu / Propane Gas

1 Answer

MY Teledyne Laars is 20 year old +

Cleaned filters, cleaned gas offices(mechanically), used blown air, took out filters and ran without them to increase water flow, pilot light is running fine...water is circulating fast...yet does not fire. What gives? Before I used to tap, w/ plastic mallet, the Aluminum alloy(?) control box and then it would fire up. Is there a valve in there that might be a bit sticky??

Sounds like the flame sensor. If the sensor doesn't see a flame, it shuts off. Good luck...Lee

Previous owner had way overfilled crankcase oil. Oil had gotten into carb and clogged air filter. Drained oil to correct level. Ran engine but kept cutting off-see above. Took off carb cover cleaned housing and ran without air filter-ran fine. Unsuccessfully tried to clean air filter with gas-did not work. Apparently, the engine could run just long enough to exhaust the air in the old filter and cut off which is why it would start back up after a few seconds. Bought new air filter-whole thing-about $15 at Carquest. Put in some carb cleaner and installed the new filter and it runs perfectly.

I have a Teledyne Laars XE and it came with the house I just moved into. It's at least 15 years old and whenever I try to heat up my spa (it's natural gas), it won't get above 80 degrees,

It sounds like its either the temperature sensor (thermistor) or the control board. If you remove the control panel you will see two gray wires that plug in the back next to each other.
unplug the wires and use a multimeter to check the resistance (ohms).
At 80 degrees the reading should be about 9 thousand ohms (9K ohms); at 75, 10.5K ohms; at 70, about 12K ohms. Otherwise the thermistor needs replacing. About $70 Not too hard to DIY but you will have to take some panels off to get to it

If your readings were pretty close, it is probably the control board having trouble, but be warned they are not cheap, about $350. Tell you pool store what you are doing and some will loan you a good board to plug in just to verify whether or not that was the problem.

Who ever you buy from, make sure they have a return policy. Some companies will not accept return on heater parts that have been removed from the original packaging.

Locate the pressure switch within the safety circuit and jump the two wires that are connected to it. Be sure the power is off when doing so. Then you can power up the unit and it should fire assuming all the remaining safety circuit switches are closed. DO NOT RUN this for more than a few moments as you can damage the heat exchanger rather quickly operating the burners without water flowing thru the heater.

Laars Teledyne Pool heater flames on for 2 seconds, shuts off

You have no flame rectification.....LLD series heaters check for a signal through the flame to ground; if the module does not detect this signal, it go through two more trials for ignition and then lock out the module. There should be a flame rod and it may need cleaning. I use steel wool.
